Steering Column

A vehicle sustaining any of these three categories from accidents will potentially develop misalignment or damage to its Steering Column: frame damage, major body damage, sheet metal damage and impact to the Steering Column and deployment of the supplemental inflatable restraints system. A visual inspection of the capsules within the Steering Column bracket assembly needs to be performed to verify proper seat alignment inside bracket slots then test for loose assembly components when using hand pressure. Check the bracket attachment to the jacket assembly; the bracket needs exchange only when capsules do not fit securely or when the bracket remains connected to the jacket assembly. Any bracket that comes with welded fixtures to the jacket assembly needs a replacement jacket assembly but not the bracket itself. Check for jacket assembly collapse by measuring the lower edge distance of upper to lower jacket points while replacing the whole assembly if measurements exceed specified standards. A visual check of the Steering Shaft should evaluate whether sheared injected plastic exists. The shaft requires replacement if any sheared plastic is detected. A dial indicator to check runout measurement on the lower end of the Steering Shaft during wheel rotation at maximum specification of 1.60 mm (0.06 inch) needs to be performed to inspect Steering Shaft alignment following any frame damage that might result in shaft bending.

Replace the steering shaft.
