Steering Column

Any vehicle subjected to a collision that produces frame damage, major body damage, sheet metal damage, impacts to the Steering Column or activates supplementary inflatable restraints systems risks developing a misaligned or damaged Steering Column. Check for loose conditions in the Steering Column bracket assembly by hand test while examining the capsule placement in their bracket slots. Inspect the bracket attachment to the jacket assembly; bolted brackets require a replacement but jacket assemblies require replacement if the capsules fail to have proper seating. The measurement between the bottom edge of upper jacket and its designated mark on the bottom jacket must be taken to check for jacket assembly collapse; a new jacket assembly is required if the recorded dimensions differ from specifications. The inflatable restraint coil assembly which has been detached from the Steering Column needs free hanging space to protect the coil assembly integrity while rotating the shaft. The inspection of Steering Shaft should detect sheared injected plastic. If a Steering Shaft shows sheared plastic it must be replaced. A dial indicator test of the Steering Shaft runout at its bottom end must be performed to verify a 1.60mm (0.06inch) or less maximum deviation when the wheel is rotated.
