Ignition Lock Cylinder

Start by disabling the sir system while applying the parking brake before you begin fixing or servicing the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Maintenance of the key code requires disconnecting the negative Battery Cable while you remove the radio or navigation display module. Insert the key into the ignition cylinder then rotate it clockwise to the run position. You can find the Ignition Lock Cylinder release button by going through the radio opening of the ip where it stands at the right bottom side of the Ignition Switch assembly. Hold the Ignition Lock Cylinder release button down using a flat-bladed tool as you pull on the ignition cylinder to remove it from the ip. Start by pushing away the bezel retaining tabs on the Ignition Lock Cylinder then remove the bezel. Remove the light pipe from the lock cylinder before you slide the reader/exciter off of the Ignition Lock Cylinder. First install the reader/exciter onto the Ignition Lock Cylinder then position the Ignition Lock Cylinder light pipe onto the ignition cylinder before completion of the installation. Position the ignition bezel onto the lock cylinder before holding it in place by activating its retainer mechanisms. The lock cylinder removal needs to use an ignition key inside the ip opening until the release button sounds a click to indicate full security. Pull the lock cylinder softly to confirm engagement and shift the ignition key to lock position for removal. Reinstall the radio module before putting away the parking brake and reattaching the negative battery lead. To finish your work check the ignition cylinder followed by the switch to verify their proper operation when they move through all positions while also enabling the sir system.

The procedure to remove Ignition Lock Cylinder begins by disabling sir and activating the parking brake followed by disconnecting the negative Battery Cable then radio removal. Place the ignition key inside the ignition cylinder. When keys are broken or ignition lock cylinders are seized the technician should remove the knee bolster by first removing the Ignition Lock Cylinder bezel then disconnecting electrical connectors from the switch before unfastening the Ignition Switch from its instrument panel retainer. Use the radio space to pull out the Ignition Switch while you protect your workspace with clean shop towels or a fender cover. The Ignition Lock Cylinder release button is on the plastic Ignition Switch housing so punch the housing at a spot 3/8 inch from the key end with a center point. Drill a small hole using a 1/8 inch drill bit. Use a 1/4 inch drill bit to enlarge the pilot hole which breaks the release button retaining spring at the location while utilizing a magnet to extract the lock cylinder release button. Grasp the Ignition Lock Cylinder while removing it from the switch housing and blow away any plastic flash generated by drilling by using compressed air. Turn the ignition to run mode then find the right lower side Ignition Switch assembly button. Use a small flat-bladed tool to depress and maintain contact with the button while pulling on the ignition cylinder for extraction. The technician must first release the tabs retaining the Ignition Lock Cylinder bezel then remove this bezel to get access to the lock cylinder for installation of the reader/exciter component. Connect the ignition cylinder light pipe to the ignition cylinder while applying the ignition cylinder bezel onto the Ignition Lock Cylinder. The Ignition Lock Cylinder needs to be cleaned if it showed signs of being seized then move to the next steps which include inserting the Ignition Switch into the instrument panel followed by connecting electrical connectors and knee bolster installation. Insert the new Ignition Lock Cylinder into its position on the Ignition Switch while keeping it in run mode and press the button straight into the drilled hole before it fully settles into position. With the ignition key installed in the Ignition Lock Cylinder and the Ignition Lock Cylinder in run, insert it into the instrument panel opening; an audible click will sound from the lock cylinder release button during complete engagement. Use gentle force to check that the lock cylinder is connected before setting the ignition to lock and taking out the key. Reinstall the radio after the negative Battery Cable reconnection and parking brake reset while testing the ignition cylinder and switch function through their entire movement range and enabling sir.

Locate the release button on the plastic ignition switch housing, center punch on the rib approximately 3/8 inch toward the key entry end, drill a pilot hole with a 1/8 inch drill bit, then drill a larger hole at the pilot location with a 1/4 inch drill bit to break the release button retaining spring.

Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position, push it into the ignition switch until fully seated, ensuring to slightly depress the release button as it passes the drilled hole.

Turn the ignition switch to RUN.
