You should begin the rear door exterior handle replacement process by detaching the trim panel. A sharp bladed tool should be used to separate the water deflector at the perforations. Start by taking out the plug in the access hole along with the lock rod that functions through the door handle. Take out the door handle nuts before extracting the door handle unit from its place inside the door. Safe the lock cylinder from the door handle through disconnecting its lock rod before you remove the door handle's retainer and lock cylinder and its gasket. Begin installation by putting the gasket and the lock cylinder into the door after which you should install the lock cylinder retainer. After attaching the lock rod to the lock cylinder you can reposition the door handle on the front door. After placing the nuts on the door handle, apply torque to 6 N.m (53 lb in) until they are secure. Proceed with installing the access hole plug after connecting the door handle lock rod to the handle. Reposition the trim panel together with the water deflector. Before assembling and installing the cylinder you must apply GM P/N 12346241 equivalent lubricant or an equivalent lubricant inside the lock case and cylinder keyway. Also use new plastic retainer clips whenever removing lock rods.

Position the nuts on the door handle before securing them to 6 N.m (53 lb in). After reconnecting the door handle lock rod you should install the access hole plug followed by reinstallation of the water deflector. The trim panel installation procedure concludes with placing it back onto the final position. It is mandatory to use fresh plastic retainers for any time a lock rod needs removal.
