Universal Joints

The J 45270 Universal Joint Remover/Installer (J 45270) lets you replace the universal joint with an external snap ring. First use pliers to compress the snap ring ends then extract the pieces once easy removal does not occur. Lightly tap the bearing cup to reduce pressure. Position the exposed part of the bearing cup in a soft-jaw vise before tapping the propeller shaft yoke upwards with a hammer to free it from the assembly. Twist the propeller shaft to push the bearing cup from the yoke opposite end before removing all universal joint pieces. Check areas where the retaining ring fits for dirt, rust, and old ring parts. Clean these areas properly before adding new parts. Apply light grease to the needle bearings and put them into new universal joint journals before installation. Insert one bearing cup into the yoke half and turn the yoke ear downward while pushing the cross until the trunnion fits freely into position. Force the yoke bearing cup until it touches the surface of the yoke and repeat the same process for the opposite side while aligning the trunnions. When resistance happens during pressing normalize the process and inspect alignment. After seeing the bearing retainer groove push the yellow snap rings provided into place or use the black snap rings instead when needed. Push the bearing retainer into the groove until both parts snap securely. Make sure the assembled part operates smoothly. Anthenticate the unbalanced force by hitting the flange areas when strain appears.

Mark the positions of the driveshaft components relative to the driveshaft tube to maintain proper balance.
