Outer CV Joint

First secure the wheel drive shaft in a soft jawed vice to replace its rear outer joint and boot. Handle the shaft carefully to prevent damaging the boot sealing surfaces during the removal process. To handle wheel drive shafts with low profile boot clamps remove both the outer boot clamp and inner boot clamp from the CV joint boot before removing the CV joint boot from the CV joint housing . When dealing with shafts featuring ear type boot clamps you need to first eliminate the inner boot clamp before you start removing the CV joint boot from CV joint housing . A hammer and wood block function to separate the CV joint from the wheel drive shaft. After this J 8059 pliers extract the retaining ring from the wheel drive shaft for CV joint boot removal. Before assembling check the CV joint by setting the boot with clamp onto the wheel drive shaft while confirming the boot rests in the groove. To install the retaining ring use J 8059 pliers followed by J 35910 drive axle boot clamp pliers to close the boot clamp to achieve a 2.15 mm (0.85 in) gap with the CV joint touching the inner retaining ring. Use wood as a block and hit the CV joint onto the wheel drive shaft before filling the CV boot with half of the lubricant and placing the other half inside the joint. Wipe away any excess lubricant. Close the clamp on the wheel drive with J 35910 pliers while using a torque wrench until the measurement reaches 2.15 mm (0.85 in), making sure locking tabs are completely engaged. To complete the boot clamp installation use CH 48894 pliers for closing then perform 4 to 5 circular motions on the CV joint for lubricant distribution before removing the wheel drive shaft from the vise to reinstall.
