    Q:
How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal of the axle shaft assembly on Chevrolet Prizm? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin repairs by taking out the wheel drive shaft and outer joint boot clamps next remove the outer joint boot and slide it towards the shaft center. Proper reassembly depends on adding reference marks to all parts because incorrect alignment creates early component wear together with excessive vibrations. Apply index marks to the wheel drive shaft and outer joint before you start disassembly of the outer joint. The entire joint replacement must happen as an assembly whenever abnormalities become noticeable. Boot cleaning of wheel drive shafts must happen without solvents because these substances lead to boot deterioration. A clean dry solvent-free cloth should be used for this task instead of any other cleaning method. Use expansion tool to loosen snap ring on outer joint and pull the joint gently until it becomes free from abs components. A soft jaw vise should hold the wheel drive shaft while you remove its outer joint seal before cleaning and inspecting the outer boot for damage and making necessary replacements. Examine the outer joint for heavy wear or broken components while testing the right drive shaft's dynamic dampener for abnormal shape. The outer joint seal installation requires a suitable sleeve, press, and wheel drive shaft damper assembly before joint installation. Crimp the damper clamp using the j 22610 so the damper sits in the wheel drive shaft groove with its centerline placed 431.3 mm (16.980 inch) from the outer joint within a 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) tolerance range after installing the outer boot without crimping its clamps, confirm proper mark alignment and complete installation by verifying the snap ring sits within its proper recess. Place the outer joint onto the wheel drive shaft by expanding the snap ring while filling the new joint with 165 - 185 grams (5.8 - 6.4 oz.) of green grease from the kit. The wheel drive shaft length should be measured for correct boot fit. The right drive shaft standard length measures 857.4 mm (33.756 inch) within 5.0 mm (0.197 inch) tolerance, while the left drive shaft standard measures 540.2 mm (21.268 inch) within 5.0 mm (0.197 inch) tolerance. After drawing the clamp's closing hooks together using the j 35566 you should crimp the clamp with the j 35566 then inspect the boots for distortion or dents before reinstalling the wheel drive shaft.
