Motor vehicle safety requires inspecting and repairing seat belts after any collision occurs. Any seat belt system which encountered an automatic restraint activation in a severe collision must have its complete replacement performed. All restraining systems which serve both adult travelers and child passengers must be inspected together with LATCH system components and top tether anchorages. A complete replacement of seat belts should be implemented when observation reveals tearage, wear and tear or damages on adult belts as well as manufactured child restrain systems and LATCH system parts. The seat belt system needs replacement when "REPLACE" or "CAUTION" markings appear or when there is a yellow tag present although replacement is not necessary if the child seat caution label alone displays. Any time doubt appears about seat belt system condition the system should be replaced along with all components used to secure infant carriers and child restraints and booster seats. During collisions owners should never change individual parts of a seat belt system in their vehicles but replace the entire buckle together with the guide and the retractor assembly. The need for replacement comes only after minor collisions with minor injuries unless component parts demonstrate any form of damage. Always verify the front seat belt retractor pretensioners post-collision using the seat belt webbing pull test; replacement of the retractor is required when you detect either grinding or rattling sounds.

Any seat belt system in use during a collision serious enough to deploy automatic restraint devices, such as airbags and seat belt pretensioners, must be replaced.
