    Q:
How to replace the rear drive shaft in an all-wheel-drive on Cadillac STS? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin the all-wheel-drive propeller shaft replacement with a vehicle lift that supports the car. For propeller shaft replacement you need to remove the rear Muffler together with the floor pan mid tunnel insulator. A suitable jack stand should be used to support the propeller shaft at the center support bearing. Align the driveshaft correctly when possible because some vehicles require shims. The first step involves removing the mounting bolts of the center support bearing followed by the removal of propeller shaft nuts and bolts with washers while performing component replacement on any damaged or excessively worn parts. To undo the transmission/transfer case flange from the propeller shaft CV Joint bolts you must use a flat-bladed screwdriver for flange shaft removal. After disassembling the jack stand you must pulled out the propeller shaft from the rear differential flange. An installer must use gm p/n 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037) lubricant for application on both the rear propeller shaft center bushing and rear differential flange pilot shaft. The installer positions the propeller shaft while being supported by another person to install the center support bearing alongside shims when available and tightens center support bearing mounting bolts to 50 nm (37 lb ft). The drive line vibration needs to be avoided by properly arranging the yellow and orange dots between the propeller shaft and drive flange. Install the rear differential with the orange paint mark matching the yellow paint mark on the propeller shaft. Also ensure all reused nut and bolt threads show cleanliness before applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the propeller shaft to flange bolt. Fasten the differential flange propeller shaft coupler before adding the bolt with washer. Torque the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts to 85 nm (63 lb ft) before installing the six propeller shaft CV Joint to transfer case flange bolts while torquing them to 36 nm (27 lb ft) in the specified installation order from 1 to 6. Complete the installation by putting back the floor pan mid tunnel insulator and the exhaust system then lower the car to its proper position.
