You should place the transmission in the neutral position and support the vehicle before starting replacement of the two-piece propeller shaft. Before proceeding with this job start by removing heatshield nuts and heatshields followed by bolt removal from the propeller shaft center bearing bracket located at the underbody. Begin by marking the transmission coupling side of the shaft then you can take out the propeller shaft by removing coupling nuts and bolts to move the shaft forward 25 mm (1 inch). After that you will lower the shaft. To detach the propeller shaft from its differential coupling you should first mark its rear surface and then remove coupling nuts and bolts to move the piece forward 25 mm (1 inch) before raising the shaft. The exhaust system allows you to slip the propeller shaft between it and the underbody so the shaft can be removed. In some cases you need to also take off the propeller shaft center bearing. First position the propeller shaft between exhaust and underbody before you can install the center bearing that was removed from the shaft. Brush both transmission and differential flange bushing surfaces clean before applying gm p/n 12345740 or equivalent grease as a light coat to their faces. Drive the propeller shaft center bearing bracket bolts through its holes into the body structure before tightening them to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Position the reference marks from the propeller shaft to differential coupling and install the propeller shaft to the rear propeller shaft coupling before tightening reverse coupling bolts and nuts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). First place reference marks from the propeller shaft with those on the transmission coupling before installing the propeller shaft onto the transmission coupling. Put on the front coupling bolts and nuts after which tighten them to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). After replacing the heatshields it is necessary to install the heatshield nuts while tightening them to 2 nm (18 inch lbs.).
