    Q:
How to replace the axle shaft on Chevrolet Prizm? Posted by Customer
    A:
Vehicle maintenance starts with wheel elevation and subsequent tire and wheel elimination. You must start by unscrewing 6 bolts and then the splash shield from the vehicle. For Steering Knuckle equipment do not forget to remove a single bolt and the abs speed sensor. A nonferrous drift should be inserted through the caliper opening into the rotor fins to stop its rotation after you remove the Axle Shaft's lock cap and cotter pin. Proceed by removing the Axle Shaft nut then removing its companion cotter pin and Tie Rod End nut. The steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) will separate the Tie Rod End from its attachment to the Steering Knuckle. Separate the Ball Joint from the Control Arm by removing 1 bolt and 2 nuts. Detach the Steering Knuckle's outer joint first before prying the left inner joint housing and right inner joint housing slowly away from the transaxle. The inspection of boots, joints, front wheel bearing oil seals and Axle Shaft oil seal at the transaxle for damage or wear requires necessary component replacements. Before installation you must apply lubrication to both Axle Shaft splines and transaxle seal surfaces followed by proper placement of the inner joint within the transaxle housing. Secure the Steering Knuckle to the outer joint before applying 1 bolt with 2 nuts to the Ball Joint on the Control Arm. Tighten all fasteners to 142 nm (105 ft. Lbs.). Fix the Tie Rod End onto the Steering Knuckle by driving in a new pin followed by a 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) nut torque setting. Anneal the nonferrous drift tool and drive it through the Axle Shaft to stop rotor movement. Afterward, install the drive shaft nut and torque it to 225 nm (166 ft. Lbs.). Secure the lock cap by installing a new cotter pin and reinstall the abs speed sensor. Then tighten the sensor bolt to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.) before adding the 6 splash shield bolts which need 8 nm (71 inch lbs.) torque. After installing the tire and wheel assembly lower the vehicle and examine the toe-in adjustment before making any necessary adjustments.
