2000 Cadillac DeVille Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the primary camshaft timing chain on 2000 Cadillac DeVille?
A: If you need to replace the Timing Chain, first remove the engine front cover and Oil Pump. Turn the timing marks in alignment and take out the secondary camshaft drive chain, followed by the Timing Chain tensioner. Next, unbolt the intermediate sprocket retaining bolt, take out the Timing Chain, crankshaft sprocket and intermediate sprocket as a unit, un-bolt the intake manifold and remove the valve covers, and remove the valve rocker arms, push rod, and exhaust valves from the valve cover. Unlike the first shaft, the intermediate shaft must only be loosened in cases where there shows signs of wear. Next, unscrew the intermediate sprocket shaft retaining bolts and remove the intermediate sprocket shaft. Check and inspect the intermediate camshaft Drive Shaft for cleanliness. The installation process starts by installing intermediate sprocket shaft and its retaining bolts tighten to 10nm (89inch lbs.). Align the timing marks of two intermediate and crankshaft sprockets vertically and then, proceed to the installation of the primary Timing Chain on the drive sprockets. Make sure that the number 1 piston is at the top dead centre (TDC) and the crankshaft keyway is at the 1 o'clock position, by using the crankshaft rotation socket (J39946) to position the crankshaft key within the drive sprocket. Add the main Timing Chain, crankshaft sprocket, and intermediate sprocket all as an assembly with the addition of intermediate sprocket retaining bolt, which should be tightened to 60nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Do not leave off the pin that holds the tensioner if the secondary timing chains are in place. Mount the Timing Chain tensioner and thereafter; mount the secondary camshaft drive chains. The pin from the primary Timing Chain-river, release lever should be removed when the timing marks are freshly put to a perpendicular alignment prior to reinstalling the Oil Pump and engine front cloth.
