2000 Chevrolet Camaro Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear drive axle shaft on 2000 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: Begin rear drive axle service by accumulating all required tools that should include the abs exciter ring protector kit denoted by part number j 39446. Start by dismounting the wheel followed by brake rotor and housing cover before proceeding. Non-traction control axle systems require installation of the j 39446 onto the speed sensor reluctor wheel . The Differential case requires removal of both pinion gear shaft lock bolt/scree before extracting the pinion gear shaft. To reach the rear Axle Shaft lock insert the flanged end of the Axle Shaft through the rear axle housing. Remove the bolt once the lock becomes accessible. The rear wheel speed sensor reluctor wheel must remain damage-free since any breakage requires a new rear Axle Shaft. Take out the rear Axle Shaft from the housing of the Differential. Move the rear Axle Shaft into its proper position while making sure the splines fit between the Differential side gear without harming the rear wheel bearing seal. To install the rear Axle Shaft lock you need to push the Axle Shaft outwards until it settles into place at the Differential side gear counterbore position. Position the pinion gear shaft through the Differential case while adding pinion gear thrust washers and pinion gears together; guide the shaft hole to align with the Differential case screw hole for the rear Axle Shaft lock. Apply loctite 242 or equivalent to the pinion gear shaft lock bolt/screw before installing it with 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) of torque. Reposition any j 39446 speed sensor component from the reluctor wheel then discard both the wheel and its plastic protector when new hardware was installed. Reinstall the rear axle housing cover and rear brake rotor and rear wheel while keeping the rear tire in place.
