2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Start Brake Pad replacement by draining 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder. Support the vehicle when raised and record the wheel position at the hub before taking out the tire and wheel unit. Fasten the rotor in place with two wheel nuts. A large c-clamp placed over the top of the caliper housing will force the Piston into the bore to provide space between pads and rotor when tightened slowly. Attach a wire hook to the strut for suspension while you unscrew and take off the caliper bolts (1, 4) from the knuckle. When you examine the caliper bolts check for damage and rust before replacing everything including bushings. Apply denatured alcohol directly to the external part of the caliper boot surface before adding new brake pads. Lower the Piston into the bores by setting a c-clamp with a metal plate below the Piston. Hold the Piston gently with a wooden block to protect parts. Push up the inner-edge caliper boot next to the Piston to release trapped air before the boot rests flat below the Piston surface. Place the pads into the caliper and connect the caliper to the knuckle with bolt (1 and 4) and tighten them to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Set the rotor free from the hub nuts until you replace the tire and wheel parts in exact position of wheel hub marks. Accurately pour clean brake fluid into the master cylinder and push down the brake pedal with 778 n (175 lb.) force three times to position the pads. Finally, burnish the pads and the rotors.
