    Q:
How to replace brake pads on Chevrolet Cavalier? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before starting please check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. When the liquid sits at the halfway mark between its maximum and minimum limits no fluid needs changing but if it is above the mark lower it to the middle point. Lift up the vehicle to position it and take off the tire and wheel bundle at the same time. Use your hands to lightly fasten two wheel lug nuts before taking off the rotor from the hub assembly. Insert a big c-clamp over the caliper housing from top to push the Piston into the bore until the pad slides off the rotor and remove the c-clamp when complete. Secure the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire to avoid damage to the hydraulic system while working. Take off the brake caliper from the knuckle and remove the brake pads from the caliper. While putting the caliper back on replace any defective parts especially bushings when you see corrosion on caliper bolts. Before putting new brake pads in place brush the caliper boot external surface with denatured alcohol then push the Piston into place using an old Brake Pad or wooden block but keep the boot and Piston safe from damage. Fasten the brake pads to the caliper before attaching the caliper to the knuckle with its bolts (1, 4) and tighten them to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Put on the wheel and tire units while unscrewing the wheel lug nuts and after lowering the vehicle. Without starting the engine apply the brake pedal to about two thirds of its range and return it to its initial position at a slow pace. Maintain a steady pressure on the pedal for 15 seconds before repeating up to the point of feeling a solid brake response. This step helps the brake pistons and pads reach their right placement. Complete the master cylinder with clean brake fluid before adjusting the Brake Pad and rotor surfaces.
