2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake pads on 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Before replacing brake pads check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. It does not require addition if the fluid stands at the midpoint of its operational range. If the reservoir holds more than this amount pump some fluid away until it measures midway. Place the vehicle on stands before you take off the wheel and tire set. Strike two wheel lug nuts by hand to keep the rotor secured to the hub assembly. Also push the Piston into position through the caliper bore by placing a large c-clamp between the caliper top and outboard pad until the Piston reaches a depth that allows the caliper to slide off the rotor. Keep the caliper safe while you detach it from the knuckle by removing both c-clamp and bolts (1, 4), then remove the pads from the caliper . Test the caliper bolt condition for erosion and repairs then install new parts including bushings at replacement. Wipe the outside surface of the caliper boot with denatured alcohol before you push the Piston down with an old Brake Pad or wooden block and avoid damaging the boot and Piston. Put the pads into the caliper first and then attach the rebuilt caliper to the knuckle while fastening it to the caliper bolts which require a torque setting of 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Take out the two rotor hub nuts then put back tire and wheel pieces before lowering the vehicle down. Turn off the engine then push and release the brake pedal until you reach 2/3 of its full movement range. Let the brake pedal rest at one-third pedal position during short holding phases until you obtain a strong brake feel which aligns the caliper Piston with brake pads. Put clean brake fluid into the master cylinder until it reaches the specified level and use the brake system to polish both pads and rotors.
