2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake pads on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: In order to replace the brake pads, you must check out the brake master cylinder reservoir for fluid quantity. If at any stage it is found to fall between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, then there is no need of its removal but if it is found higher then reduce to the midway. Raise and support vehicle - remove tire and wheel assembly. Tighten 2 opposite wheel nuts onto wheel studs hand tightly to anchor therotor to the hub. Clamp the body of the brake caliper with a large c-clamp, placing ends touching the rear of the caliper body and an old inboard Brake Pad or a block of wood against the caliper piston, and make sure to tighten it equally until the caliper piston is compressed enough to travel past the brake rotor. Unscrew the c-clamp all the way out, loosen the caliper bolts (1, 4) from the Steering Knuckle all the way out, and suspend the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire without disconnecting the hydraulic brake flexible hose. To change the brake pads of the car, take the caliper assembly off the Steering Knuckle and remove the brake pads from the caliper and the disc Brake Caliper Bolt from the caliper assembly. Check the caliper bolts for rust, corrosion, and damage; if any problems discovered, change the bolts and bushings . For installation, please use a large c-clamp to press the caliper piston perfectly into the bore of the caliper, and then remove the c-clamp and the old break pad or wood block. Apply lubricant to the caliper bushings and bolt the caliper bolts in place to the caliper and fix the brake pads to the caliper. Clean the Brake Pad mating surface on the Steering Knuckle of any debris or corrosion, apply it to the surface a thin layer of high-temperature silicone brake lubricant, and install the caliper assembly to the Steering Knuckle. With your new tire and wheel assembly, tighten the caliper bolts (1, 4) to 51 n.m (38 lb ft), then take off the wheel nuts that hold the rotor to the hub. The other wheel is slightly lower, then with the engine turned off, gradually apply the Brake Pedal to about 2/3 of travel distance, let off gradually, wait 15 seconds, and apply Brake Pedal once more until firm feel comes from properly seating brake caliper pistons and brake pads. Lastly, top up the brake master cylinder reservoir to the appropriate level and burnish the pads and rotors.
