2000 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the fuel gauge sender in a plastic fuel tank on 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The first step to service the fuel gauge sender inside a plastic tank requires following the fuel pressure relief procedure to reduce system pressure. Both Fuel Tank draining and Fuel Tank removal procedures follow. You should first remove the fuel sender assembly before taking off the Fuel Pump and fuel level sender electrical retaining clip at the top of the modular fuel sender assembly. Seize the upper fuel reservoir by prying out the three positioned tabs which connect to the lower reservoir. The procedure starts with pressing tab to remove the upper reservoir followed by pushing the Fuel Level Sensor above the housing by pressing tab . The retaining clip on the electrical connector needs removal before removing the fuel level sender wires from the connector with a note on their locations. To install the system the wires must pass under the fuel level sender until the tab locks into position. Simple and logical installation requires putting the Fuel Level Sensor downward into the housing before you put the upper reservoir into the lower reservoir where the 3 tabs should lock in place. The two wires need attachment to the connector after securing them with a retaining clip before proceeding with attaching the Fuel Pump and Fuel Level Sensor electrical connector with a different retaining clip. Reinstall the fuel sender assembly before putting back the Fuel Tank along with fuel storage and the fuel fill cap. Use the negative cable to connect the battery before proceeding with a leak check. Turn on ignition when the engine stays off for 2 seconds followed by 10 seconds of ignition off time before another engine off ignition on inspection to check for fuel leaks.
