2000 Chevrolet K3500 Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2000 Chevrolet K3500?
A: Services and repairs of the lower Ball Joint start by lifting the vehicle and placing it on appropriate safety stands. Eliminate the tire and wheel mounting, while keeping the floor jack in place beneath the low Control Arm to maintain its position. Jack the Control Arm up until it is supported by the floor jack. Then, take off the halfshaft, stabilize the brake caliper using a piece of wire to avoid harming the Brake Line while taking off the brake caliper. J 39549 (Ball Joint Tie Rod End Separator) is used to free up the Ball Joint from the knuckle after the cotter pin and nut have been removed from the lower Control Arm Ball Joint. Remove the lower Control Arm from the knuckle and then the knuckle and then the Ball Joint from the lower Control Arm with the j 9519-e (Ball Joint Remover/Installer Set) and j 41435 (Ball Joint Remover and Installer Kit). Check the tapered hole of the Steering Knuckle for dirt or damage and replace the knuckle if there is dirt or any signs of damage. For installation, the following should be done to be sure that the lower Control Arm Ball Joint and the new Ball Joint have been cleaned of the mounting surfaces, using loctite (R) cleaning solvent 755, not on the Ball Joint seal. Now insert the new Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm with a 6mm (1/4 inch) bead of loctite 680 spread uniformly on the serrations of the Ball Joint. Insert it with the grease fitting facing towards the back of the vehicle. Press with Ball Joint using j 41435 (Ball Joint Remover and Installer Kit) and make sure that the notch points at the grease fitting. Place the Ball Joint into Steering Knuckle and install the stud nut and tighten it up to 128 nm (94 ft. Lbs.); position the slot of the stud nut parallel to the hole of the stud. Do a double check on the stud and secure it with a new cotter pin, install the halfshaft back and the brake caliper. Finely, reinstall the tire and wheel assembly, check front wheel alignment, and drop the vehicle.
