2000 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube located at the condenser to evaporator hose connection in the evaporator hose on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Before replacing the A/C Orifice Tube at the condenser to evaporator hose connection in the evaporator hose one should recover the refrigerant and lift up the vehicle. First detach the evaporator hose assembly from the condenser by removing its bolt and then immediately seal the condenser line end to avoid contamination. Use needle nose pliers to obtain the edge of the A/C Orifice Tube while avoiding the filter screen and then draw the tube out. Securely cap or tape the evaporator tube to stop contamination. Apply proper care to the A/C Orifice Tube when removing it from the inlet pipe using needle-nosed pliers. The process requires you to apply heat from the heat gun about 7 mm (1/4 in) away from the dimples while performing a turning and push-pull motion to loosen and remove the tube. Use proper methods to clean every contaminant from inside the evaporator inlet line. The inspection of the A/C Orifice Tube requires attention to three possible conditions: a broken plastic frame and a torn or damaged filter screen (1,2) or damage or plugging to the brass orifice tube. Required replacement of this tube occurs if any of these conditions exist. To reuse this tube install a previously oiled o-ring made from mineral oil base 525 viscosity. Insert the tube with the short filter screen pointing out (it should enter the outlet side first) into the evaporator line after removing either its cap or tape. Apply 525 viscosity refrigerant oil to a new o-ring seal before you install it onto the cleaning surface of condenser tube fittings then mount the evaporator hose assembly to the condenser and tighten the bolt to 25 n.m (18 lbft). The process requires lowering the vehicle while completing evacuation and recharging of the a/c while inspecting system performance followed by leak testing.
