2000 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The service process for automatic transmission fluid filter starts by raising the vehicle while applying support under it. A drain container should be placed beneath the transaxle Oil Pan. The process of removing Oil Pan bolts needs special attention to protect the Oil Pan seals from damage that would result in fluid leakage. Drain the vehicle by removing front and side Oil Pan bolts before turning the rear bolts four times. To initiate the fluid drainage tap the Oil Pan gently with a rubber mallet while using a pry tool to open it before inspecting the fluid color. You should then remove all remaining Oil Pan bolts while taking out the Oil Pan during this step. Once the Oil Pan bolts are out, proceed to remove the Oil Pan followed by the Oil Pan gasket. Insert a long screwdriver through the opening of the oil filter neck to separate the part from the seal then verify the filter seal condition for damage or wear. The removal of the seal will require the j6125-1b (Slide Hammer) together with the j23129 (Axle Boot Remover). You should install a fresh seal that you have coated with j36850 or petroleum jelly before placing a new filter inside the case for proper installation. Use new gaskets but only when the Oil Pan sealing ribs show damage during the installation. Check the Oil Pan condition before installation by cleaning it free of grease. Replace damaged parts before mounting the Oil Pan. Lower the vehicle after tightening the Oil Pan bolts to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.). The transaxle requires dexron iii fluid to reach proper levels for filling purposes and leakage inspection should be done on the Transmission Pan during fluid level verification.
