2000 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake pads on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Use the master cylinder to drain 2/3 of brake fluid before starting pad replacement. Place the vehicle on stands and note wheel position then take off tire and wheel parts while keeping rotor secured by two wheel bolts. Set a large c-clamp on top of the caliper housing then against the Piston back and slowly turn the clamp until the Piston retracts for pad removal. Use the wrench to hold the brake caliper pin from rotating when removing caliper bolts. Keep the caliper safe while doing maintenance by wrapping a wire hook around the strut. You must take out the caliper and pads from the bracket after removing the caliper to reach the brake pads plus their shims. Check the condition of the caliper pin boots and Piston boot then replace any defective parts. Replace all caliper hardware if you notice corrosion while you examine this part. Clean the boot surface of the caliper with denatured alcohol before using a c-clamp and wooden plate or metal plate to push down the Piston during the Brake Pad installation. Apply gm p/n 18010908 silicone grease or equivalent onto caliper pins and push up the inner-edge boot next to the Piston to release trapped air. Add caliper shoes and pins to the bracket first and then install both shims. At the beginning of forward wheel rotation place the wear sensor on the leading pad edge before you attach the pads to both caliper parts and its mounting bracket. Change the wheel nuts that hold the rotor to the hub before putting on the tires and wheel unit. Also place the wheel index marks directly against the hub marks on installation. Put the vehicle down and add brake fluid to reach the right fluid level in the master cylinder. Fix the j 28662 Brake Pedal effort gauge in place on the Brake Pedal before pressing the Brake Pedal three times with 778 newton (175 pound) effort to initiate pad seating then do further pad and rotor burnishing.
