• Q: How to replace the Timing Chain and Variable Timing Sprocket on 2000 Chevrolet Tracker?

  A: To replace timing chain and sprockets, remove first the negative battery craft and the spark plugs for easy Crankshaft rotation to align the timing of the mark. Replace the timing chain cover, align the timing marks in order to avoid valve and Piston damage during disassembly; camshafts may be 15 and the crank 90 if needed. Turn the Crankshaft so that number 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC), keyway on the Crankshaft faces the engine block mark, arrow on the idler sprocket faces upward, and the guide pins on the castings of the Camshaft sprockets are aligned with the notches on the Cylinder Head. Slightly turn the intake Camshaft counterclockwise to relieve tension on the Camshaft timing chain, pull off the nut and bolts, camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner and gasket. Then, take off the Crankshaft Timing Chain Tensioner, adjustable guide, fixed guide, idler sprocket, crankshaft timing chain, and Crankshaft timing sprocket, and inspect the timing chain guides, idler sprocket, crankshaft timing sprocket, and chain for wear and damage, and make sure the Crankshaft Timing Chain Tensioner works properly. For the installation of Crankshaft sprocket, make sure you ensure that the timing mark on the engine block is lined with crank shaft keyway and then add engine oil on the idler sprocket bushing. Put on the timing chain to the idler sprocket so that the dark blue link can match with the mark on the sprocket, timing chain to the Crankshaft sprocket so that the yellow link can match with the mark of the Crankshaft. Mount the idler sprocket, then the timing chain fixed guide, then tighten the bolts to 9 nm (62 inch lbs) then timing chain adjustable guide, tighten bolt to 25 nm (19 ft. Lbs.). Compress the plunger of the Timing Chain Tensioner, hold in place using a retainer before installing it and tightening bolts onto them at a torque of 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). Take out the retainer and have the Crankshaft keyway fall into the engine block mark, the yellow link from the Crankshaft timing chain should fall into its timing mark, and the dark blue link match the mark of the idler sprocket. Check to ensure the guide pins of the camshafts in the Cylinder Head notches and the arrow of the idler sprocket points upwards. Position the yellow link of the Camshaft timing chain and match it with the idler sprocket arrow, and the dark blue link with the arrow mounted on the Camshaft sprockets and link in, subsequently installing the Camshaft timing sprockets and chain, securing the Camshaft sprocket bolts to 80 nm (58ft. Lbs.). Compress fixing the Camshaft tensioner plunger and apply a retainer and on fixing the Camshaft tension chain, fix the Camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner, use a wrench to fast the bolts to 11 nm (97 inch lbs) and the nut to 45 nm, (33 ft. Lbs.). Pull the retainer, rotate the Crankshaft two turn which is equal to the repositioning of the key-way into the timing mark as well as ensuring that the guide pin on the camshafts is positioned with the notch of the Cylinder Head. Scrub in some engine oil on the timing chains as well as the tensioner, guides, and sprockets and also install the spark plugs using 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs) of torque followed by the timing chain housing and reattach the negative Battery Cable.
