2000 GMC C3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2000 GMC C3500?
A: Place safety stands under the frame and lift the vehicle to work on the lower Ball Joint. Take off both tire and wheel parts. When you put the floor jack under the lower Control Arm you must keep it in place while doing this work to stay safe from harm. Position your floor jack beneath the Control Arm spring seat so it holds up the Control Arm. Protect the brake system by securing the caliper with wire before taking out the brake caliper. Split the Ball Joint from the knuckle using the Ball Joint separator tool j23742 before taking off its nut and cotter pin. Insert a wooden block between the frame and upper Control Arm to keep the knuckle assembly away from your workspace. After that, take off the lower Control Arm from its position in the knuckle using a screwdriver while also lifting up the upper Control Arm with a pry bar. Insert the lower Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm by tightening the Ball Joint remover and installer set tool j9519-d. If the tapered knuckle hole shows damage or dirt, replace it at once because roundness and shape issues require new parts. Install the new Ball Joint into the lower Control Arm with the Ball Joint remover and installer set (J9519-D) until it reaches its bottom position on the Control Arm. Position the Ball Joint stud into the Steering Knuckle and complete installation by tightening the stud nut to 128 nm (94 ft. Lbs.) while keeping the stud nut slot overlapping the stud hole. Replace the brake caliper after putting the new cotter pin on the stud and tightening the Ball Joint stud nut. After putting on the tire and wheel attach the vehicle to the ground before inspecting the front wheel alignment.
