2000 GMC Safari Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper ball joint on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: Place the vehicle on a lift and take apart its wheel and tire before working on the upper Ball Joint. First release the Torsion Bar and afterwards take away the brake hose system and its attaching hardware as well as the speed sensor bracket from the upper Control Arm. Discover the center of each rivet using a 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) drill bit before drilling a 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) deep hole and completing the process with a 13 mm (1/2 inch) drill bit. Locate and remove the rivets with a pin punch before uninstalling the nut and cotter pin. The Ball Joint separator (J 36607) helps remove the Ball Joint from the knuckle when you support the knuckle and push the tool through. After fitting the new Ball Joint in the upper Control Arm add both speed sensor and brake hose brackets. Connect the Ball Joint parts and secure the parts by tightening the brake hose bracket nut and wheel sensor bracket nut to 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.), and the upper Ball Joint nuts to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Thread the Ball Joint into its position on the knuckle and ensure all torques are achieved when the Control Arm is set in its z height position. Put in a new cotter pin by tightening the upper Ball Joint nut by 1/6 of its thread then push the pin into place and bend it against the nut edges. Attach the Brake Line assembly while adding grease lubricant to the upper Ball Joint which needs to show grease from its seal. Put tension on the Torsion Bar then put on the tire and wheel unit before lowering the vehicle to check the steering alignment.
