2001 Cadillac Catera Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2001 Cadillac Catera?
A: Before replacing the vacuum Brake Booster you need to take out both the windshield wiper transmission and the a/c evaporator tube extension on the cowl. Pull off the level sensor from the brake fluid reservoir and take out the Brake Master Cylinder. Disconnect the vacuum hose attached to the power Brake Booster and remove the driver side front floor air outlet duct. Sterilize the clevis adjustment only when you replace the Brake Booster. While holding the Brake Master Cylinder clevis steady, push out the Brake Pedal pivot pin from the Brake Master Cylinder pushrod using a chisel or punch. Open the cab to view the Brake Master Cylinder pushrod clevis from the Brake Pedal and detach it from the assembly. Also remove the fuse and relay panel screws plus the panel itself. Keep the setup aside to clear the space. Take the Brake Pedal bracket nuts out and separate the power Brake Booster with its gasket (from the cowl). The power Brake Booster support bracket nuts and washers follow before the support bracket and gasket are taken from the booster. Take away the clevis with the power Brake Booster pushrod nut for power Brake Booster replacement. Install both parts of the clevis onto the new booster and adjust its position on the pushrod to target dimensions from 105.5 mm to 106.5 mm (4.0 - 4.4 inch). Finalize by tightening the adjusting nut. Before continuing test the pushrod at 7.04 - 7.125 inches then put on the power Brake Booster gasket before bracket and washers. Secure the booster support nuts to their designated positions and tighten them to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Mount the power Brake Booster gasket to the studs on the bracket without putting any foreign material or sealing compound on the booster installation surface. Put the booster unit on top of the gasket and secure it to the cowl. Torque the Brake Pedal brackets to 15 ft. Lbs. When tightening them after placing and installing the fuse and relay panel screws that remain flush without becoming stripped. Put the Brake Master Cylinder clevis to the Brake Pedal then add the Brake Pedal pivot pin and pin retainer. Replace the driver side air duct underneath the floor and reconnect the booster hose to the power brake unit followed by the brake unit. Connect the brake fluid sensor wire to the reservoir opening and put on the a/c evaporator tube extension to the cowl before adding the windshield wiper transmission. Let air out of the brake lines to finish the procedure.
