• Q: How to replace the Timing Cover on 2001 Cadillac Catera?

  A: First, take out the intake air resonator and intake plenum and lift the vehicle, while holding it in place. Then remove the 4 engine splash shield bolts and the engine splash shield. Counterhold the generator bolt on the back side of the generator then remove the air injection crossover pipe bracket nut off generator bolt and remove air crossover pipe bushing nut per bracket on left side of the engine. Remove the air crossover pipe clamps from the rubber hose and remove the air crossover pipe from the air pipe hoses. Lower the car and disconnect the hose clamp and hose from the check valve, and remove the air crossover pipe . Unfasten the Water Pump Pulley bolts, power steering pump pulley bolts, remove the strap bolt that supports the a/c compressor hose to the air injection crossover bracket, and accessory Drive Belt. Prudently pull forward to take out the wiring harness channel cover and let go of the plastic retaining tabs on the wiring harness channel extension and remember the wiring harness routing before taking out the wiring harness from the channel. Remove the bolts holding the Water Pump Pulley and the Water Pump Pulley, the power steering pump pulley bolts and the power steering pump pulley in turn. Next, take out the accessory Drive Belt tensioner bolts and the tensioner; next, the front timing bolt and the cover bolt and the cover. In case applicable, transfer the wiring harness channel and inspect the sealing strip from the outer edge of the front timing belt cover for any cracks or tears and replace it if necessary. For the installation start with the installation of the front timing belt and its bolts which need to be tightened at the rate of 8 nm (71 inch lbs). The accessory Drive Belt tensioner along with its bolts is checked, tightened to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.), and the power steering pump pulley along with its bolts checked, when tightened to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Mount the Water Pump Pulley and fasten it with bolts to 8 nm (71 inch lbs), and route the harness wire into the channel and the channel cover for the wiring harness and extension. Then slot the accessory Drive Belt in place, then install the a/c compressor hose support strap bolt to the air injection crossover bracket, tightening it to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Install installing the air crossover pipe and the air check valve at the end of the air hose followed by the air check valve hose clamp. Lift up the vehicle once more this time to fit the air crossover pipe to the air pipe hoses and the air crossover pipe clamps. Assemble the air crossover pipe bushing nut and tighten the same to 12 nm (108 inch lbs.) followed by counterholding the generator bolt in order to install the air injection crossover pipe support bracket nut and tighten in the generator bolt to 40 nm ( 30 ft. Lbs.) finally, install the engine splash shield and its 4 bolts, torque down to 10 nm (89 inch lbs), lower the vehicle, and replace the intake plenum and intake air resonator.
