2001 Chevrolet Astro Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2001 Chevrolet Astro?
A: To replace Timing Chain and sprockets, you should remove the engine front cover and the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring first. To rotate the engine, put a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt on the end of the Crankshaft without using the Crankshaft balancer bolt or larger than 1 inch bolt to prevent damaging bolt threads and the Crankshaft threaded hole. Before you take off the Timing Chain, you should align timing marks, and if it's necessary to turn the camshaft or Crankshaft with the Timing Chain taken off, loosen or remove valve rocker arms to avoid Piston to valve contact. Rotate the Crankshaft to make sure both sprockets timing markds coincide, and the number four cylinder is at top dead center ( TDC ) of compression stroke. Then, take out the Timing Chain and sprockets and clean and check them. For installation, install the Timing Chain and sprockets, do not reuse the bolt of the Crankshaft to avoid leakages of oil for the final installation of the engine front cover.
