How to Service and Repair Rear Brake Calipers on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?

For servicing and repairing the rear brake caliper, remove it from the vehicle. Be careful with the fingers being placed in front of the Piston under pressurized air to prevent serious injury. Use clean cloths to pad the inside of the caliper housing when removing the pistons. Apply adequate air pressure to gently ease the pistons out of the bores without causing any damage. Take out the Brake Caliper Piston from the bore of the caliper by pumping in low pressure compressed air through the fluid inlet hole. Use a tiny wooden or plastic tool to pry off and remove the Piston dust boot seal and the Piston seal from the caliper . Second, dispose of the bleeder valve and cap of the caliper. Avoid using abrasives or brushes to clean the Brake Caliper Piston, but instead, clean the Piston bore, seal counterbore, and caliper Piston using denatured alcohol or substitute, and dry them with non-lubricated, filtered air. Check the caliper bore for cracks, smearing, pitting, a lot of rust or corrosion; if there's light rust or corrosion there, try to get rid of it with fine emery paper, but if it is not possible, change the caliper assembly. If there are presence of cracks, scoring, and excessive corrosion, replace the caliper assembly too. Check for any damage to the chrome plating of the caliper Piston and change it out if needed. Lubricate the new Piston seal with delco supreme 11 (R) or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed jar, and then press the lubricated seal into the caliper bore. Put the new Piston dust boot seal with the fold towards the brake caliper housing Piston bore opening into the bore groove before sliding the Piston into it. Push the Piston to the bottom of the bore and make sure that the boot is seated correctly inside the Piston groove and the groove of the bore of the caliper. Lastly, install the bleeder valve and cap to the caliper and tighten firmly, and install the caliper back to the vehicle.
