- Q: How to replace the rack and pinion inner tie rod off on 2001 Chevrolet Malibu?A: Begin inner Tie Rod replacement by removing both the Rack And Pinion boot and shock dampener from the assembly of the inner Tie Rod. Push the shock dampener along the rack until it reaches its original position. Position one wrench on each flat section of the rack assembly and another wrench on the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing . Rotate the housing counterclockwise to release it from the rack. The process requires cleaning old loctite(R) adhesive residue from both rack threads and inner Tie Rod threads. After cleaning rack threads slide the shock dampener forward onto the rack prior to applying loctite(R)262 (or equivalent) to the inner Tie Rod threads. Attach the inner Tie Rod to the rack through a torque wrench on the inner Tie Rod housing flats while applying a wrench to the rack assembly flats and tightening to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Before finishing the Rack And Pinion assembly slip the shock dampener over the inner Tie Rod housing exactly until the front lip of the shock dampener makes contact with the inner Tie Rod housing.
