2001 Chevrolet Metro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake drum on a hubless design without ABS on 2001 Chevrolet Metro?
A: To replace the Brake Drum in the case of a hubless design without abs, this would involve lifting and supporting the vehicle, and then tire and wheel assembly needs to be removed. Remove the Spindle Nut dust cap with a chisel and unstake the Spindle Nut with the help of a punch. Take off the Spindle Nut and washer from the spindle and discard the Spindle Nut. Remove the plugs, one of the park brake and a plug on the backing plate. Insert a screwdriver on the backing plate plug till it reaches the shoe lever stopper, push the screwdriver in the orientation of the arrow. Use a j 2619-01 slide hammer and a j 34866 wheel hub remover and remove the drum, attaching the j 34866 to the drum with two wheel nuts. Check the Brake Drum and replace it if you find it is necessary, as well as any parts of the brake which are worn, distorted, cracked, or corroded. For installation, wedge open the rod and ratchet with a flat screwdriver to maximize lining-to-drum clearance and set the brake shoe stopper back to its original position. Mount the drum to the spindle and fasten it with a washer and a new Spindle Nut (spindle nut to 80 to 120 Nm, (58 to 86.5 ft. Lbs) and stake). Should the Spindle Nut dust cap be damaged or it does not fit, replace it and tap the collar of the dust cap until it hits the Brake Drum using a plastic hammer. Reinstall tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle, and press the brake pedal 3 to 5 times with approx. 30 kg (66 lb) to produce correct lining-to-drum. Finally, adjust the park brake.
