2001 Chevrolet Metro Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the rear Shock Absorber on two-door and four-door on 2001 Chevrolet Metro?
A: Rear suspension strut servicing requires first opening the liftgate of two-door models or accessing the rear compartment lid on four-door models. A two-door model requires removal of the strut tower trim for access so position the rear seat back toward the front. The rear compartment side trim must be repositioned on four-door models to reveal the strut nuts. Vehicle elevation supports access to both the upper and lower parts of the strut before moving forward with tire and wheel assembly removal. Lower the rear suspension with a floor jack so you can remove both the bolt connecting the strut to knuckle and the pair of nuts securing the strut. Cut the vehicle's spring using the floor jack as a stabilizer to maintain brake hose safety. A wedge should be inserted into the knuckle to expand its opening when removing a hard-to-remove strut. When setting up the installation position the compressed strut on the knuckle while making sure the strut alignment projection correctly faces its direction. Fix the two nuts onto the strut then apply torque of 30 nm (24 ft. Lbs.) to each nut. After reattaching the trim cover to the strut tower you must return the rear seat into its normal upright position on two-door vehicles. Before installing the trim, make sure to place it on four-door models near the rear compartment. Use the bolt to fasten the knuckle before torquing it to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). After that remove the jack, place the wheel and tire back on and lower the vehicle. Pull the liftgate shut for two-door vehicles while closing the rear compartment hatch works for four-door models.
