2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the Shock Absorber on 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: This suspension strut service requires the following equipment: Strut Spring Compressor (J 34013-B) and Damper Rod Clamp (J 34013-20) and Alignment Rod (J 34013-197) and Upper Strut Adapter (J 34013-125) and Lower Strut Adapter (J 34013-971) and Strut Rod Nut Socket (J 42991). Service and repair of the suspension strut requires the following seven tools: Strut Spring Compressor (J 34013-B), Damper Rod Clamp (J 34013-20), Alignment Rod (J 34013-197), Upper Strut Adapter (J 34013-125), Lower Strut Adapter (J 34013-971), and Strut Rod Nut Socket (J 42991). First position the strut outside the vehicle on the Strut Spring Compressor (J 34013-B). Secure the strut with wing nuts while keeping the wider adapter end facing forward. Both the Lower Strut Adapter (J 34013-971) and Upper Strut Adapter (J 34013-125) need correct assembly positioning when working together. Fit the strut into the adapter slots followed by adapter closure before using locking pins to secure it. Tool failure will result from over-compression of the spring during installation. The Strut Rod Nut Socket (J 42991) with the T-45 bit can remove the strut nut which must be discarded after releasing spring tension from the compression process. After following the initial procedures secure the strut flat against the Upper Strut Adapter (J 34013-125) during assembly. After installing the Damper Rod Clamp (J 34013-20) for shaft retention, you must position the spring seats properly and compress the spring until shaft threads become visible before continuing. Use the Alignment Rod (J 34013-197) then check that it remains straight. Set a new strut nut in place while the shaft remains steady between the T-45 Torx bit and the Strut Rod Nut Socket (J 42991). Tighten the nut to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) manually. After using the Strut Spring Compressor (J 34013-B) remove all tools before reattaching the strut into the vehicle while performing a rear wheel alignment adjustment.
