2001 Chevrolet Prizm Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter for the 4 Speed-MS7 on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: The servicing process for the automatic transmission fluid/filter of the 4 speed-ms7 starts by raising the vehicle before placing supportive equipment under it. Six bolts need to be removed to detach the left splash shield. A drain pan must go underneath the transaxle fluid pan before you uninstall the Drain Plug so the fluid can drain out. When taking off the transaxle fluid pan be careful not to harm the mating surfaces until you use a rubber mallet with a wood block for removal instead of metal prying tools. Begin by removing the 18 bolts and transaxle fluid pan with gasket and next proceed to remove 3 bolts to detach the fluid filter screen with its gasket from the Valve Body. Fluid pan clutch material is typical at small levels but signals an immediate check of the transaxle components. The inspection of the fluid pan must rule out foreign materials while a solvent cleans the fluid filter screen until replacement if damage is found. You should clean both the transaxle fluid pan magnets along with the bottom of the pan and remove all gasket materials that rest between mating surfaces. Secure the fluid filter screen gasket along with fluid filter screen onto the Valve Body by tightening 3 bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Position a new transaxle fluid pan gasket before installing the fluid pan which should be fastened to the vehicle with 18 bolts at 4.9 nm (43 inch lbs.). Begin with the transaxle Drain Plug reinstall while tightening it to 17 nm (13 ft. Lbs.) before removing the drain pan along with left splash shield installation using 6 bolts tightened to 5 nm (44 inch lbs.). Deplete the vehicle height when you finish filling the transaxle until it reaches the proper level.
