2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable in an Allison automatic transmission on 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500?
A: To replace the Shift Cable in an allison auto transmission, first make the Steering Column shift lever in the park position, and lift the vehicle. Make sure the transmission manual shaft is in mechanical park to remove the retainer that holds the Shift Cable to the transmission bracket and then disconnect the Shift Cable terminal shaft end from the transmission shift lever ball stud, while ensuring the transmission manual shaft's mechanical park. From the transmission bracket remove the Shift Cable by pressing the 2 tangs on conduit end fitting and move towards the rear of the vehicle. Find the center connector on the transmission Shift Cable, retract the white plastic cover, and raise the center tabs of the lock button. Discard the ejected e-clip and pinch the Shift Cable center connector ends together to die the cable half from the car. Install a new e-clip by using a section tool to press the e-clip horizontally against the under end of the conductor with the conductor running vertical like a ladder with this uplet pressing the e-clip onto the conductor power cable after the Steering Column shroud is placed and removed by shifting the Steering Column shift lever into park, remove the driver's seat. Peel the carpet and insulating materials in the driver's area and remove the retainer that holds the Shift Cable to the Steering Column, remove the Shift Cable terminal shaft end from the Steering Column ball stud. Remove the Shift Cable conduit end fitting from the Steering Column bracket, making sure not to awkwardly twist or bend the Shift Cable. This involves removing the Shift Cable from support, as well as taking out the grommet from the floor panel. Lift the vehicle once more and take out the two clips that are made for holding onto the Shift Cable to the floor panel reinforcement. Remove the cable terminal end fitting from the transmission manual shaft ball stud, and discard the removed e-clip. The new front half of the Shift Cable will have an e-clip already fitted. Pull off the center connector ends of the Shift Cable and remove the cable half from the vehicle. To install, put the Steering Column shift lever in park and the transmission manual shaft lever into mechanical park. Mount the two clips on the Shift Cable to the floor panel reinforcement, put the Shift Cable through the hole on the floor panel, and mount the grommet on the Shift Cable. This should be referred to as lowering the vehicle and fitting the end fitting of the Shift Cable conduit to the Steering Column bracket with the tangs fully seated. Connect the Shift Cable terminal shaft end to Steering Column ball stud and hold it in place using retainer. Mount the Shift Cable to the support and tighten the bolt fixing the Shift Cable support to the brace to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Install and uninstall the current carpet and insulation, the driver's seat, and the Steering Column shroud. Raise the vehicle once more, hold the front half (cab end) of the transmission cable in the left hand and the rear part (transmission end) of cable in the right hand, align the outside diameter of cable on the inside diameter of cable . Push the end of the Shift Cable, inside the end of Shift Cable until the blue spring on Shift Cable is fully compressed, but you should not grab the Shift Cable end during this process. Release the end of Shift Cable to let the blue spring tension the Shift Cable system and pull back the white cover on the end of Shift Cable and push the natural colored lock button down to let the locking teeth engage. Make sure that the white cover hides the natural colored lock , and if not, repeat the necessary steps. At last, check the transmission based on a proper shift operation, and if it is impossible to obtain all the gear positions, then readjust the Shift Cable where necessary.
