2001 GMC Jimmy Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the left exhaust manifold on a 4.3L engine on 2001 GMC Jimmy?
A: Start the left Exhaust Manifold replacement process for a 4.3l engine by taking out the air cleaner outlet duct, intermediate Steering Shaft and disconnecting the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector. The first step involves removing the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet pipe from the Exhaust Manifold and the radiator inlet hose support bracket nut and all nuts bisecting the secondary air injection (AIR) pipe to the Exhaust Manifold if it is present. After removing the air pipe together with its gasket you must lift the vehicle before proceeding to remove the Exhaust Pipe from the Exhaust Manifold. Lower the vehicle until it reaches the specified height before taking off the left front tire to access bolts at the rear Exhaust Manifold. After that remove the fender wheelhouse. To disconnect the Spark Plug Wires you should pull the wire boot one half a turn before pulling it outward. Begin by first taking out Exhaust Manifold bolts and stud and finally lowering the vehicle. Under the hood operators should remove the Exhaust Manifold and Spark Plug wire shields while discarding the old exhaust gaskets before cleaning both mating surfaces. When you install the new Exhaust Manifold gaskets fit them onto the Exhaust Manifold before you position it onto the engine and proceed to raise the vehicle. To begin the installation process insert the Exhaust Manifold from the wheelhouse opening and after that attach the Spark Plug wire shields. Install gm p/n 12345493 or its equivalent on the threads of both the Exhaust Manifold bolts and stud before tightening them first to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) then to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). The wheelhouse extension should be installed first followed by the left front tire while restoring contact between the Spark Plug Wires and the retainers and plugs. After raising the vehicle for Exhaust Pipe installation onto the Exhaust Manifold the team must lower it until completion. Connect the egr valve inlet pipe to the Exhaust Manifold with 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) of torque force and then reconnect the ect sensor wire and install new gaskets on the air pipe along with the air pipe that should be tightened at 55 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Install the radiator inlet hose support bracket with nut then tighten to 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) after which accomplish the installation of intermediate Steering Shaft before you attach air cleaner outlet duct.
