Start by taking out the lower Intake Manifold along with the valve rocker arms and valve pushrods then organize them in a rack for future installation. After removing the bolts you must place the valve lifters upright in a rack to conserve oil inside them. The application of valve lifter remover (J 3049-A) becomes necessary to remove stuck lifters caused by gum or varnish deposits. Use solvent to clean the valve lifter bores before inspecting them thoroughly for either wearing or scoring damage because replacing the engine block may become necessary. Check the Camshaft for signs of wear and damage while performing additional inspections after its removal. Sort and mark all assembly components before cleaning them with solvent followed by compressed air drying. Look for excessive wear and damage or cracks in the valve lifter Pushrod guides, while inspecting the valve lifters for missing clips or damaged Pushrod sockets along with scuffed or worn lifter bodies, worn rollers, loose pins and damaged components, and plugged oil holes. New lifters should receive gm p/n 12345501 lubricant or an equivalent product applied to the rollers before replacement. Reused lifters must go back to their initial mounting positions. Begin the installation process with valve lifter Pushrod guides then secure their guide bolts at 16 nm (12 ft. Lbs.) torque before adding valve rocker arms, pushrods, and repositioning the lower Intake Manifold.
