- Q: How to replace the negative battery cable on 2001 GMC Safari?A: When replacing the negative Battery Cable start by putting the transmission into park, activating the parking brakes and securing the wheels. Remove power to the Distributor through the battery connection. Use the j 39200 digital multimeter to measure three different voltage drops: negative terminal to frame, positive terminal to starter terminal stud, and starter housing to frame. Perform these measurements during starter operation. Excessive resistance which results in voltage drops above 0.5 volts requires that technician clean the connections or replace frayed cables and replace corroded clamps. Keep the new cables identical to the original ones by type, diameter and length specifications. Begin battery negative cable removal by removing the Battery Cable bolt then disconnecting from the engine before discarding extra ground leads. The new battery negative cable must follow original cable orientation for rwd or a4wd systems before hooking up to the engine. Secure the nut at 40 n.m (29 lb ft). Secure the engine harness to its stud while applying 25 n.m (18 lb ft) of torque force. Secure the battery negative cable ground lead to the radiator support and torque the stud to 45 n.m (33 lb ft). Next, fasten the battery negative terminal bolt to the battery with 15 n.m (11 lb ft) torque force.
