  • Q: How to replace the starter motor on 2001 GMC Safari?
    A: To change the Starter motor, first, remove the battery negative cable and agitate the vehicle. Reseve all the Starter motor mounting bolts and any shims previously used and lower the Starter motor. Remove the Starter motor Starter enable relay lead from the Starter solenoid field leads, leads from the generator output (BAT), disconnect the battery positive cable, prior to removing the Starter motor. For installation, connect Starter motor field leads while loosely fitting the Starter enable relay lead to the Starter solenoid terminal which terminal retaining tab to align with the solenoid. Slack-install the generator output (BAT) lead and the battery positive cable to the solenoid terminal at the same time as aligning the battery positive cable terminal retaining tab to the Starter solenoid. Fasten the Starter enable relay lead nut for 2nm (18lb in) and battery positive cable turn to 19nm (14lb ft). Install the two mounting bolts for the Starter motor and any required shims through the Starter motor to the engine and tighten the bolts to 43 n.m (32 lb ft). Finally, switch off the car and reconnect the negative cable of the battery.
