2001 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front and rear Drive Shafts on 2001 GMC Safari?
A: Raising the vehicle should be followed by precise marking of the propeller shaft position relative to the front axle flange. Detach the front axle bolts from the propeller shaft before removing the propeller shaft. When installing the propeller shaft begin by attaching its rear part to the Transfer Case followed by connecting it to the front axle with proper reference mark alignment. Secure the front axle bolts with a torque of 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.) after which you should lower the vehicle. Raising the vehicle once more is necessary to work on the replacement of the rear propeller shaft. Notate the position of the shaft before removing its components. Proceed by removing bolts used on the pinion flange rear mounting then extract the retainers with caution for the original propeller shaft yoke ears. Before lowering the propeller shaft underneath the rear axle make sure to slide the shaft forward first and avoid excessive joint universal inclination. Tape bearing cups beforehand to avoid roller loss from the cups. Inspection should confirm that burrs on the nylon injected yoke outer diameter are absent while bearing cups fit evenly without cross assembly assembly and slip yoke splines are checked for wear and twisting. Proper part cleaning should use a suitable solvent before proceeding with installation. Service the slip joint or companion flange by installing a new Universal Joint followed by slip joint lubrication then attaching the yoke and cross assembly onto the pinion flange with reference mark alignment. Secure the retainers on the pinion flange before installing bolts that should be tightened to 27 ft. Lbs. (36 Nm). After securing them, lower the vehicle.
