    Q:
How to replace the rear Drive Shaft on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before replacing the rear propeller shaft the vehicle needs to be lifted at first so that all driveline elements can be properly marked down including the propeller shafts drive axles pinion flanges and output shafts in order to maintain factory system balance by ensuring they are assembled in their original positions. When removing the bolts from the pinion flange and retainers use caution by avoiding impacts to the original propeller shaft yoke ears which could break the injection joints and never disturb the relationship between yoke and Universal Joint with prying tools. Tape the bearing cups to stop loose rollers while advancing the propeller shaft forward until you can lower it under the rear axle without letting the Universal Joint joint reach extreme angles to avoid breakage. A suitable solvent should be used to clean all components followed by an inspection that includes the examination of nylon yoke outer diameter for any burrs and proper bearing cup seating and slip yoke spline condition for wear or twisting followed by necessary part replacements. The installation process starts with sliding the propeller shaft into the transmission while applying lubrication to the slip joint. The yoke along with the cross assembly gets fitted onto the pinion flange with proper seating after matching the reference marks that exist on the pinion flange and the propeller shaft rear yoke. Fasten the retainers and bolts onto the pinion flange before tightening them to 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.) underneath the vehicle.
