The tools needed to service and repair the Differential side bearings on an 8.6 inch axle include: split plate bearing puller (J 22912-B), universal driver handle -3/4 in-10 (J 8092), side bearing installer (J 21784), side bearing remover kit (J 22888-D), Differential side bearing installer (J 29710), and Differential Bearing and hub seal installer (J 44420). Start with the Differential assembly removal and fix it in a vise. Perform the removal of Differential side bearings using a side bearing remover kit (J 22888-D) in order to install, protect the Differential case by using its universal driver handle (J 8092) on the opposite side from the bearing installation. Immediately, apply the side bearing installer (J 21784) and the universal driver handle (J 8092) to push the new bearings onto the case, using either the side bearing installer (J21784) or the Differential side bearing installer (J 29710). Finally, reinstall the Differential assembly.

When replacing the Pinion Bearing of an 8.6 inch axle begin by elevating and supporting the vehicle. Work on the axle by first removing the Differential assembly together with the pinion gear. The dt 49275 - Pinion Bearing remover together with the j 22912-b - bearing remover enable the Pinion Bearing and spacer's removal by placing a brass drift in the axle housing while moving the drift forward and backward to achieve uniform cup extraction. The procedure includes the removal of both outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups through puncturing them with a hammer and brass drift. The installation of the outer bearing cup starts with the j 28677 - needle bearing installer alongside the j 8092 - universal driver handle and concludes with the dt 49032 - Pinion Bearing cup installer for the inner cup. Place the selective pinion spacer with its proper thickness onto the pinion gear. Install the Pinion Bearing with its spacer using the j 22828 - input shaft gear installer while hammering and maintaining adequate lubrication by applying axle lubricant. The axle housing receives the pinion outer bearing before the pinion gear installation and completion with the new pinion seal. The installation process requires placing back the Differential components and lubricating the axle properly ahead of returning the support system and decreasing the vehicle height.

The tools necessary to handle Differential side bearing replacement on an 8.6-inch axle include j 22912-b (Split Plate Bearing Puller), j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10) and j 21784 (Side Bearing Installer) together with j 22888-d (Side Bearing Remover Kit), j 29710 (Differential Side Bearing Installer) and j 44420 (Differential Bearing and Hub Seal Installer). Together with j 22912-b (Split Plate Bearing Puller) and j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10) the tools include j 21784 (Side Bearing Installer), j 22888-d (Side Bearing Remover Kit), j 29710 (Differential Side Bearing Installer) and j 44420 (Differential Bearing and Hub Seal Installer). First secure the Differential assembly in a vise after separating it from the rest of the vehicle. Start by placing the j 22888-20a and j 8107-4 over the Differential case side bearing bore before using the j 22888-20a to remove the Differential side bearings. Before bearing installation on the case side put the j 8107-4 tool against the side that does not require bearings. Proceed by placing the j 21784 and j 8092 onto the Differential case bearing before using either the j 21784 or j 29710 along with the j 8092 to drive the bearing onto the case. Finally, reinstall the Differential assembly.

The tools needed to handle Differential side bearing replacement on an 8.0 inch axle include j 8092 universal driver handle and j 21784 side bearing installer along with j 22888-d side bearing puller kit and j 45231 Differential side bearing installer. The required tools needed to replace Differential side bearings on an 8.0 inch axle include j 8092 universal driver handle (J 8092), j 21784 side bearing installer (J 21784), j 22888-d side bearing puller kit (J 22888-D), and j 45231 Differential side bearing installer (J 45231). Start by taking out the Differential unit while securing it into the vise clamp. The j 22888-20a and j 8107-2 should be used together with the j 22888-20a to remove the Differential side bearings. Extract the Differential assembly from the vise once all side bearings have been taken off. During bearing installation protect the Differential case using the j 8107-2 installation tool which should face the opposite side of bearing installation. Install the j 45231 and j 8092 onto the Differential case bearing before driving it onto the case using these two tools. Finally, reinstall the Differential.

To replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.6 inch axle, the following tools are required: j 8092 driver handle (J 8092), j 8608 rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8608), j 8611-01 rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8611-01), j 8614-01 flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01), j 22388 rear axle pinion oil seal installer (J 22388), j 22912-b split plate bearing puller (J 22912-B), j 24433 pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433), and j 45871 Pinion Bearing remover (J 45871), j 45900 Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 45900). The first step involves lifting the vehicle then taking out both the Differential assembly followed by splitting the drive pinion from the axle. The j 45871 must be inserted first around the Pinion Bearing before placing the inverted j 22912-b around the j 45871. Both tools can be used to press off the bearing. Insert a hammer and brass drift to remove the shim along with both outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing. Lay out the Pinion Bearing cups where the j 8611-01 joins the j 8092 to secure the outer cup and j 45900 linked to the j 8092 to install the inner cup. Assess the required shim size for the pinion then position it in between the inner Pinion Bearing and the gear shoulder. The j 24433 tool helps install the inner Pinion Bearing while pressing it until the cone seats properly on the pinion shim. Use a newly installed collapsible spacer while you apply lubrication to the pinion bearings before placing the outer bearing inside the axle housing. Installation of the new pinion oil seal happens using j 22388 while simultaneously inserting the pinion into its housing by applying sealant to the yoke splines with pre-made location marks guiding the yoke installation. To install the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft you should use a soft-faced hammer to tap it into place before adding the washer and new pinion nut. Tighten the pinion nut by using the j 8614-01 tool on the pinion yoke until the pinion end play reaches its limit while rotatable tightening enables the bearings to properly seat. Aviation test the pinion torque during rotation and adjust it to 1.0-2.3 n.m (10-20 lb in) for used bearings or 1.7-3.4 n.m (15-30 lb in) for new bearings before continuing. Use the j 8614-01 on the pinion yoke while tightening the pinion nut until the pinion end play is just taken up. After rotating the pinion multiple times to allow the bearings to seat properly, install the Differential assembly followed by lubricant addition before lowering the vehicle.

Use the Bearing Installer (J 7817) and Driver Handle (J 8092) to install the outer pinion bearing cup.

Drive the bearing onto the case using the J25299 or the J21784 and the J8092 before reinstalling the differential assembly.

Raise and support the vehicle.

Reinstall the differential assembly, fill the axle with the proper lubricant, and lower the vehicle.

Take out the drive pinion from the axle and press the bearing off using the J 22912-B.

Use the Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer (J8611-01) along with the Driver Handle (J8092).

Place the J 8107-2 on the side opposite the bearing installation.

Install the washer and a new pinion nut.

The required tools are J8092 Universal Driver Handle (J8092), J21784 Side Bearing Installer (J21784), J22888-D Side Bearing Remover Kit (J22888-D), J22912-01 Split-Plate Bearing Puller (J22912-01), and J25299 Side Bearing Installer (J25299).

Use the Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer (J5590).

Rotate the pinion several times to ensure the bearings have seated, rechecking the rotating torque and adjusting if necessary.

Remove the differential side bearings with the J 22888-20A.

Use J 7817 and J 8092 for the outer pinion bearing cup, and J 8608 and J 8092 for the inner cup.

Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) to the splines of the pinion yoke, align it with the marks made during removal, and seat it onto the pinion shaft with a soft-faced hammer until a few threads show.

Measure the drive pinion and differential side bearing preload, ensuring the values are within specifications, and adjust shim thickness as necessary.

Extract the outer pinion bearing cup from the axle housing using a hammer and brass drift, working it out evenly, and repeat for the inner pinion bearing cup.

Install the J25299 (7.6 inch axle) or the J21784 (8.6 inch axle) and the J8092 onto the differential case bearing.

Remove the shim and the outer and inner pinion bearing cups from the axle housing using a hammer and brass drift.

Continue tightening the pinion nut in small increments until the correct torque is achieved.
