2008 Chevrolet Colorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.0 Inch Axle on 2008 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: Drivers must start by lifting the vehicle and then disconnecting the Differential before continuing with drive Pinion Bearing replacement on an 8.0 inch axle. Use the j 22912-b tool to extract the drive pinion from the axle before using it to remove the bearing inside. Work the outer and inner pins of the housing out with the j 22912-b and a hammer and brass drift until even extraction is achieved. After the shim removal, proceed to work out the Pinion Bearing cups. Per installation proceed by using j 7817 to set the outer Pinion Bearing cup and j 8608 for the inner cup alongside j 8092 for both operations. The pinion needs a selective shim to be positioned between its inner bearing and gear shoulder. Insert the inner Pinion Bearing with the j 24433 until it fully rests on the selected shim before placing a new collapsible spacer. Separate pinion bearings receive a proper axle lubricant before pinion insertion into the housing followed by application of the outer Pinion Bearing onto the pinion. The installation of the new pinion oil seal requires the j 33782 tool for insertion while you should apply gm p/n 12346004 sealant to pinion yoke splines before aligning it to reference marks from removal. Tapping the pinion yoke with a soft-faced hammer should be done until only several threads appear before installing a new washer and pinion nut. Maintain constant contact between the pinion yoke and j 8614-01 while using it to tighten the pinion nut until the end play just achieves its limit and finish by rotating the pinion to seat the bearings. The rotating torque should be measured using an inch-pound torque wrench at values from 1.0 to 2.8 n.m (10-25 lb in) for used bearings and 1.7 to 3.4 n.m (15-30 lb in) for new bearings. The technician should repeat small tightness increments of the nut while monitoring torque until reaching the target range and then perform several pinion rotations for bearing seating before rechecking torque. Close by reinstalling the Differential system then add appropriate lubricating oils before finally lowering the vehicle.
