2007 Chevrolet Colorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings on 2007 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: The replacement process for drive pinion bearings starts with vehicle elevation and Differential carrier assembly removal before the drive pinion extraction from the axle. The split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-B) enables bearing removal from the pinion after which you can take the shim. Use a hammer and brass drift to extract the outer Pinion Bearing cup from the axle housing while working it out in even motions before repeating the procedure for the inner Pinion Bearing cup. The outer bearing race installer (J 7817) with the universal driver handle (J 8092) should be used to install the outer Pinion Bearing cup while the rear Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 29609) and universal driver handle (J 8092) combination is required for the inner Pinion Bearing cup installation. Install the pinion shim of determined thickness between the inner Pinion Bearing and gear shoulder. By using the Pinion Bearing race installer - rear (J 5590) you can press the inner Pinion Bearing onto the pinion shim until the cone seats. Use a new collapsible spacer while adding appropriate axle lubricant to the pinion bearings. Put the pinion into position inside the axle housing so that you can then add the outer Pinion Bearing. Install the axle pinion oil seal installer (J 21128) to place a new pinion oil seal before adding sealant gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) to the pinion yoke splines. Position the yoke correctly based on the removal marks while installing it. To position the pinion yoke properly on the pinion shaft use a soft-faced hammer until several threads prove visible through the yoke opening. Subsequently install the washer and brand-new pinion nut. Apply the flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) to the pinion yoke and use it to modify the pinion nut while gripping the tool until the pinion end play reaches its desired level. Use an inch-pound torque wrench to check pinion rotating torque until it reaches 1.0-2.3 n.m (10-20 lb in) for used bearings and 1.7-3.4 n.m (15-30 lb in) for new bearings. Continue tightening the pinion nut with small steps to reach the correct torque value if initial measurement falls under the specified range. You should rotate the pinion multiple times following torque achievement to guarantee proper bearing seating before rechecking and readjusting torque when needed. Put back the Differential carrier assembly before lowering down the vehicle.
