2006 Chevrolet Colorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings in the front drive axle on 2006 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: Starting the process of drive Pinion Bearing replacement in the front drive axle requires vehicle lift and separation of Differential carrier assembly before removing the drive pinion from the axle. The split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) serves to furnish bearing removal from the pinion before the shim can be removed. Use even pressure from a hammer and brass drift to remove the outer Pinion Bearing cup from the axle housing and perform the same extraction method on the inner Pinion Bearing cup. To install the outrace Pinion Bearing cup readers should use the outer bearing race installer (J 7817) with a universal driver handle (J 809.2) while the rear Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 29609) combined with the universal driver handle (J 809.2) must be used to install the innface bearing cup. Place the determined selective shim between the inner Pinion Bearing and the gear shoulder. The inner Pinion Bearing must be pressed into its place using the Pinion Bearing race installer - rear (J 55913) until the cone settles onto the pinion shim. Then proceed with installing a fresh collapsible spacer before applying proper axle lubricant to the pinion bearings. After this put the pinion inside the axle housing. Use the j 21128 axle pinion oil seal installer to install a new pinion oil seal upon the outer Pinion Bearing which has already received placement onto the pinion shaft. Put gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) sealant on the splines of the pinion yoke before installing it by matching the alignment marks from un installation. Use a soft-faced hammer to tap the pinion yoke onto its pinion shaft until several threads are exposed through the yoke but before fixing the new washer and pinion nut. Hold the pinion yoke in position using flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) while tightening the pinion nut until the pinion end plays is fully seated by rotating the pinion during this procedure. An inch-pound torque wrench should be used to check the pinion's rotary torque and it should range from 1.0 to 2.3 nm (10 to 20 inch lbs.) for used bearings or 1.7 to 3.4 nm (15 to 30 inch lbs.) for new bearings. Follow the procedure by tightening the pinion nut in small steps until you reach the proper torque value when the indicated range shows that the value is lower than expected. When the target torque value is achieved the technician should rotate the pinion multiple times to verify bearing seating then recheck the torque before reinstalling the Differential carrier and lowering the vehicle down.
