The rotating torque measurement of the pinion should range from 1.0 to 2.3 nm and 1.7 to 3.4 nm (10 to 20 inch lbs and 15 to 30 inch lbs) depending on whether you work with used or new bearings. Use the flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) to tighten the pinion nut while checking torque values until reaching proper specifications. The pinion bearings should receive axle lubricant before the outer Pinion Bearing gets installed into the retainer. After installing the new pinion oil seal through the j 44414 tool you should place the pinion into the bearing retainer and the drive pinion flange/yoke. Insert an original shim of 0.41 mm (0.016 in) size, unless the original shim is not available, to attach the pinion gear bearing retainer onto the axle housing. Install the inner Pinion Bearing with the j 24433 tool while placing a new breakable spacer in position. After lubricating the pinion bearings apply the retainer to the outer Pinion Bearing. The j 44414 is used to install the new pinion oil seal after which the pinion must be installed into the bearing retainer with sealant applied to the pinion yoke splines before final installation. Use the j 8614-01 to tighten the pinion nut until the end play reaches its minimum point while holding it. For the Pinion Bearing we should install either the original shim or a 0.41 mm replacement shim instead of j 8614-01. Put the pinion gear bearing retainer to the axle housing then bolt it down to 88 n.m (65 lb ft) torque setting. Check the pinion rotation torque against its indicated specifications. The pinion nut should be tightened to its correct torque measurement before rotating the pinion multiple times for proper bearing seating. You must reinstall the Differential assembly then adjust the Differential side bearing preload before determining the drive pinion selective shim thickness and adjusting the backlash and filling the axle with lubricant and finally lowering the vehicle.

The necessary tools for Pinion Bearing service and Differential side bearing replacement include j8092 universal driver handle (J8092), j21784 side bearing installer (J21784), j22888-d side bearing remover kit (J22888-D), j22912-01 split-plate bearing puller (J22912-01) and j25299 side bearing installer (J25299). You should start by removing the Differential assembly then place it into a vise for security. Remove Differential side bearings by using either j8107-2 (7.6 inch axle) or j8107-4 (8.6 inch axle) together with j22888-20a. Move the Differential assembly from the vise position when the removal process completes. The j8107-2 or j8107-4 presents direct bearing installation protection to the Differential case from its opposite side. Install the Differential case bearing with both the j25299 (7.6 inch axle) and its mating part j21784 (8.6 inch axle) together with the j8092. Drive the bearing onto the case by applying the j25299 or the j21784 and j8092 tools before the Differential assembly can be rebased.

Install the differential, fill the axle with lubricant, and lower the vehicle.

Install the outer pinion bearing into the differential drive pinion gear, followed by the drive pinion flange/yoke or oil seal.

Next, remove the inboard shims.

Use the J 22388 to install a new pinion oil seal.

Install the J25299 (7.6 inch axle) or the J21784 (8.6 inch axle) and the J8092 onto the differential case bearing.

The required tools are: Pinion Oil Seal Installer-Rear (J22388), Differential Side Bearing Installer (J22761), Split Plate Bearing Puller (J22912-01), Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer (J24433), Pinion Bearing Installer (J37624), Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 inch - 10 (J8092), Rear Pinion Bearing Installer (J8608), and Flange and Pulley Holding Tool (J8614-01).

Install the J45711 and the J36597, then use the J45711 and a hydraulic press to remove the bearing, ensuring to mark the inboard shims as left or right.

Use the Split Plate Bearing Puller (J 22912-01) and a hydraulic press to remove the inner pinion bearing, and a hammer with a brass drift to extract both the outer and inner pinion bearing cups.

Install the outer pinion bearing cup using the J 7818 and J 8092.

Install the outer pinion bearing into the axle housing, followed by a new pinion oil seal using J 22388.

Install the J 45231 and J 8092 onto the differential case bearing and drive the bearing onto the case using the J 45231 and J 8092.

Install the differential drive pinion gear outer bearing into the axle housing, followed by the differential drive pinion gear itself, and then the new differential drive pinion gear seal.

Either the Side Bearing Installer (J 21784) or the Differential Side Bearing Installer (J 29710) can be utilized.

1.0 - 2.3 Nm (10 - 20 inch lbs.) for used bearings and 1.7 - 3.4 Nm (15 - 30 inch lbs.) for new bearings.

Reinstall the differential carrier assembly and lower the vehicle.

Remove the differential side bearing cage and roller bearings from the inner bearing race, then extract the inner bearing race from the differential assembly using a method that will not damage the differential case.

Sealant (GM P/N 12346004 or Canadian P/N 10953480).

Remove the thrust washer and install the J 22536, ensuring it is firmly seated on the pinion. Drive the pinion out using the J 22536 and a hammer, taking care not to let the pinion fall out of the rear axle housing.

Remove the pinion gear bearing retainer, pinion yoke, and oil seal.

Use either the J8107-2 (7.6 inch axle) or the J8107-4 (8.6 inch axle) along with the J22888-20A to remove the differential side bearings.

Use the Inner Bearing Race Installer (J 7818).

Remove the pinion preload shims, inner pinion bearing cup, and oil deflector using the Pinion Bearing Race Remover - Dana 248 (J45703) and Universal Driver Handle - Non-Threaded (J42176), then remove the outer pinion bearing cup with the Pinion Bearing Race Remover - Dana 248/267 (J45705) and Universal Driver Handle - Non-Threaded (J42176).

Install the inner pinion bearing using the Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer (J24433) until the cone seats on the shim, followed by a new collapsible spacer.

Install a new collapsible spacer and lubricate the pinion bearings with the proper axle lubricant.

Use the Differential Side Bearing Installer (J 22761) for the pinion gear pilot bearing.

Use a hydraulic press and appropriate supports.

Extract them from the axle housing using a hammer and brass drift, ensuring even removal.

Use the J 8611-01, J 7818, or J 8608 and J 8092.

Begin by raising the vehicle and removing the tire and wheel assemblies, followed by the brake calipers and rotors.

Begin by removing the differential assembly.

Reinstall the differential, fill the axle with the proper lubricant, and lower the vehicle.

A 0.41 mm (0.016 in) shim.

For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 45871 around the pinion bearing and the J 22912-B in an inverted position around the J 45871, then press the bearing off using both tools.

Measure the rotating torque with an inch-pound torque wrench, ensuring it is within 1.0-2.3 Nm (10-20 lb in) for used bearings or 1.7-3.4 Nm (15-30 lb in) for new bearings, adjusting the nut as necessary.

Rotate the pinion several times to ensure proper seating of the bearings, recheck the torque, and adjust if needed, then reinstall the differential and fill the axle with the appropriate lubricant before lowering the vehicle.

Insert the outer pinion bearing.

The required tools are: J8092 Universal Driver Handle (J8092), J21784 Side Bearing Installer (J21784), J22888-D Side Bearing Remover Kit (J22888-D), J24430 Differential Side Bearing Installer (J24430), J36597 Side Bearing Puller Pilot - 9.25 inch (J36597), J45711 Differential Side Bearing Remover- Dana 248 (J45711), J45900 Differential Side Bearing Installer - Dana Axles (J45900), and DT46725 Side Bearing Installer (DT46725).

Tighten to 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).

Attach the J 21784 and J 8092 to the differential case bearing, and drive the bearing onto the case using either the J 21784 or J 29710 along with the J 8092.

Rotate the pinion several times to ensure proper seating of the bearings, then install the differential assembly, fill the axle with lubricant, and lower the vehicle.

Use the Flange and Pulley Holding Tool (J 8614-01) on the pinion yoke while tightening the pinion nut until the pinion end play is just taken up.

Repeat the process with a hammer and brass drift for the outer and inner pinion bearing cups, and then remove the pinion gear pilot bearing.

Determine the thickness of the pinion position shim and pinion preload shim for the drive pinion.

The required tools are: J 7818 (Inner Bearing Race Installer), J 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10), J 8611-01 (Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer), J 8614-01 (Flange and Pulley Holding Tool), J 22306 (Pinion Cup Bearing Installer - Rear), J 22912-B (Split Plate Bearing Puller), J 22828 (Input/Counterbalance Race Installer), DT-47688 (Pinion Bearing Remover, 8.6 Inch Axle Installer), J 36614 (Inner Pinion Bearing Installer), and J 45870 (Pinion Bearing Cup Installer).

Determine the selective shim thickness for the pinion and install it between the inner pinion bearing and the shoulder on the gear.

Remove the pinion preload shims and pinion spacer (for the 10.5 inch axle) from the drive pinion.

Reinstall the differential assembly, adjust the differential side bearing preload, determine the selective shim thickness for the drive pinion, adjust the backlash, fill the axle with lubricant, and lower the vehicle.

Determine the selective shim thickness and install it between the inner pinion bearing and the shoulder on the gear.
