GMC Savana 1500 Pinion Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Pinion Bearing on a 10.5 Inch Axle on GMC Savana 1500?
A: Begin by lifting the vehicle before you remove its Differential assembly in order to replace the Pinion Bearing on a 10.5 inch axle. Begin by removing the pinion gear bearing retainer after which you should take off the pinion yoke and oil seal before extracting the outer Pinion Bearing. A hydraulic press along with suitable supports allows users to remove both the Differential pinion gear and collapsible spacer. The j 22912-b remover enables the removal of the inner Pinion Bearing from the Differential pinion gear while using brass drifts in the slots to gently extract the bearing cups throughout the process. Use a hammer and brass drift to extract the Pinion Bearing cups both inside and out followed by removal of the pilot bearing for the pinion gear. The installation requires placement of the drive pinion pilot gear bearing inside the Differential housing with j 22761 installer and j 8092 driver. First install the inner Pinion Bearing cup by using j 37624 installer together with j 8092 driver followed by the outer Pinion Bearing cup that needs j 8608 installer and j 8092 driver application until the pinion achieves proper cone settlement. The j 24433 installer requires the use of a hydraulic press to set the inner Pinion Bearing followed by the placement of a new collapsible spacer and lubrication with axle lubricant for all pinion bearings. First install the outer Pinion Bearing into the Pinion Bearing retainer and follow it with the new pinion oil seal using the j 44414 installer. After that, secure the pinion into the pinion gear bearing retainer. Install the drive pinion flange/yoke by itself to the pinion gear bearing retainer while omitting sealant and add the original shim or a new 0.41 mm (0.016 in) shim when the original is unavailable. Install the Pinion Bearing retainer to the axle housing by tightening bolts to 88 nm (65 lb ft). Measure the pinion rotational torque while checking for values between 1.0-2.3 nm (10-20 lb in) in used conditions and between 1.7-3.4 nm (15-30 lb in) in new bearings applying the j 8614-01 remover for adjustments if required. The specified torque should be reached first on the pinion but subsequent multiple rotations are required for bearing seating before rechecking and readjustment of torque if needed. Install the Differential assembly before you adjust the Differential side bearing preload then select the appropriate shim thickness for the drive pinion and make backlash adjustments. End with lubrication of the axle before removing supports which allow the vehicle to descend.
