    Q:
How to replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.6 Inch Axle on Chevrolet Express 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
First lift the vehicle and take out both the Differential assembly and the drive pinion from the axle before drive Pinion Bearing replacement on 8.6 inch axles. The split-plate bearing puller (J22912-01) enables removal of drive pinion bearings after which you need to take off the selective pinion shim. The outer Pinion Bearing cup must be extracted from the axle housing by using a hammer and brass drift while alternating sides during the removal process. You should execute the same steps once more to remove the inner Pinion Bearing cup. Install the specific parts with the rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J8611-01) along with the universal driver handle (J8092), then use the Pinion Bearing cup installer (J45870) and universal driver handle (J8092) for the other procedure. You should set a selected shim thickness which should go between the gear shoulder and the inner Pinion Bearing. Position the inner Pinion Bearing using the pinion cone and side bearing installer (J24433) to achieve cone contact with the pinion shim while pressing. The next procedure requires replacing the collapsible spacer with new ones while applying the correct axle lubricant on both pinion bearings. The installer tool extension housing oil pump/seal installer (J38694) brings in the new pinion oil seal as the outer Pinion Bearing enters the axle housing. The pinion installation in the axle housing requires new yoke sealant (GM P/N 12346004 or Canadian P/N 10953480) on the pinion yoke splines prior to positioning followed by a proper yoke alignment to the removal reference marks. Use a soft-faced hammer to install the pinion yoke onto the pinion shaft until a few threads become exposed before adding a new washer and pinion nut. Reusing the previous pinion nut is forbidden. Use the flange and pulley holding tool (J8614-01) to secure the pinion yoke and continuously tighten the pinion nut with tool support until the pinion end play reaches its entire range. A torque wrench with inch-pound measurements should be used to measure pinion rotating torque which should fall within 1.0 - 2.3 nm (10 - 20 inch lbs.) for secondhand bearings while new bearings should maintain a torque of 1.7 - 3.4 nm (15 - 30 inch lbs.). Expand the pinion nut tightening until you reach the recommended torque level when the initial measurement falls under the target range. Check the torque specification on the pinion once validated afterward you should rotate the pinion several times before rechecking the torque for potential adjustments. End with the Differential assembly reinstallation before you add the correct lubricant and let the vehicle lower.

    Q:
What tools are required to replace the drive pinion bearings on 9.75 inch and 10.5 inch axles on Chevrolet Express 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the drive pinion bearings on 9.75 inch and 10.5 inch axles, the following tools are required: j 22536 pinion driver (J 22536), j 22912-b split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-B), j 42176 universal driver handle - non-threaded (J 42176), j 44417 rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 44417), j 45703 Pinion Bearing race remover - dana 248 (J 45703), j 45704 Pinion Bearing race installer - dana 248 (J 45704), j 45705 Pinion Bearing race remover - dana 248/267 (J 45705), j 45706 Pinion Bearing race remover - dana 286 (J 45706), j 7818 inner bearing race installer (J 7818), and j 8092 universal drive handle - 3/4 in - 10 (J 8092). Start the procedure by lifting the car then unfastening the Differential components one by one beginning with pinion yoke followed by oil seal then thrust washer. Secure the j 22536 onto the pinion while ensuring its complete seat. Next, drive the pinion outward by using j 22536 and a hammer with care for preventing pinion exit from the rear axle housing. Drawable the pinion preload shims and both axles with the pinion spacer (10.5 inch axle only) from drive pinion assembly before setting them aside. To remove the inner Pinion Bearing cup and oil deflector of both axle types use j 45703 (9.75 inch axle) or j 45706 (10.5 inch axle) together with j 42176. The operator can remove the outer Pinion Bearing cup with a combination of the j 45705 and the j 42176. The selective pinion shim should be extracted first followed by the inner Pinion Bearing removal with j 22912-b along with hydraulic equipment. To install both inner and outer Pinion Bearing cups first select the j 45704 with j 8092 when dealing with a 9.75 inch axle or j 44417 with j 8092 for a 10.5 inch axle then set up the j 7818 with j 8092 for the bearing cup installation. Selectively adjust the thickness of the selective pinion shim as well as the pinion preload shim for the drive pinion before reassembling the Differential and lubricating the axle properly. Finally, lower the vehicle.

    Q:
What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the differential bearings on Chevrolet Express 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
You need the following equipment to work on the Differential side bearings: some of the needed tools are the j8092 universal driver handle, the j21784 side bearing installer, the j22888-d side bearing remover kit, the j24430 Differential side bearing installer, the j36597 side bearing puller pilot - 9.25 inch, the j45711 Differential side bearing remover- dana 248, the j45900 Differential side bearing installer - dana you should begin the process by taking off the Differential assembly. When working on the 8.6 inch or 10.5 inch axle with rpo g80, put the Differential assembly in a vise, use the j22888-20a and j8107-4 for the 8.6-inch or j8107-3 for the 10.5 inch, both as shown, and follow up by removing the side bearing with the j22888-20a. After taking the Differential out of the vise, use the j45711 and j36597 as shown on the 9.75 inch axle, and take out the side bearing with the j45711 and a hydraulic press. Take apart the 10.5 inch axle without rpo g80 by taking the Differential side bearing cage and roller bearings off the inner bearing race, then carefully remove the inner bearing race without damaging the Differential case. Protect the Differential case by using the j8107-4 for the 3.6 inch axle, j36597 for the 9.75 lay the bearing on the Differential case, then put the side bearing installer from the j8092 onto the Differential side bearing and lower it in place. For the 8.6 inch axle, use j21784, and if you have 9.75 inch or 10.5 inch with no rpo g80, use j24430 or j45900, but for the 9.75 inch with rpo g80 use dt46725. Use the suitable installer and j8092 to drive the bearing onto the Differential case, and afterwards secure the Differential assembly.

    Q:
How to replace the Pinion Bearing on a 10.5 Inch Axle on GMC Savana 1500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin by lifting the vehicle before you remove its Differential assembly in order to replace the Pinion Bearing on a 10.5 inch axle. Begin by removing the pinion gear bearing retainer after which you should take off the pinion yoke and oil seal before extracting the outer Pinion Bearing. A hydraulic press along with suitable supports allows users to remove both the Differential pinion gear and collapsible spacer. The j 22912-b remover enables the removal of the inner Pinion Bearing from the Differential pinion gear while using brass drifts in the slots to gently extract the bearing cups throughout the process. Use a hammer and brass drift to extract the Pinion Bearing cups both inside and out followed by removal of the pilot bearing for the pinion gear. The installation requires placement of the drive pinion pilot gear bearing inside the Differential housing with j 22761 installer and j 8092 driver. First install the inner Pinion Bearing cup by using j 37624 installer together with j 8092 driver followed by the outer Pinion Bearing cup that needs j 8608 installer and j 8092 driver application until the pinion achieves proper cone settlement. The j 24433 installer requires the use of a hydraulic press to set the inner Pinion Bearing followed by the placement of a new collapsible spacer and lubrication with axle lubricant for all pinion bearings. First install the outer Pinion Bearing into the Pinion Bearing retainer and follow it with the new pinion oil seal using the j 44414 installer. After that, secure the pinion into the pinion gear bearing retainer. Install the drive pinion flange/yoke by itself to the pinion gear bearing retainer while omitting sealant and add the original shim or a new 0.41 mm (0.016 in) shim when the original is unavailable. Install the Pinion Bearing retainer to the axle housing by tightening bolts to 88 nm (65 lb ft). Measure the pinion rotational torque while checking for values between 1.0-2.3 nm (10-20 lb in) in used conditions and between 1.7-3.4 nm (15-30 lb in) in new bearings applying the j 8614-01 remover for adjustments if required. The specified torque should be reached first on the pinion but subsequent multiple rotations are required for bearing seating before rechecking and readjustment of torque if needed. Install the Differential assembly before you adjust the Differential side bearing preload then select the appropriate shim thickness for the drive pinion and make backlash adjustments. End with lubrication of the axle before removing supports which allow the vehicle to descend.

    Q:
How to replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.6-inch axle on GMC Savana 3500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Vehicle lifting begins the process of drive Pinion Bearing replacement on an 8.6-inch axle followed by Differential assembly removal then drive pinion extraction from the axle. The split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-B) generates sufficient pressure to remove drive pinion bearings and has a step to take the selective pinion shim. The extraction of both outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing should be done through proper use of a hammer and brass drift for even removal. Install the outer Pinion Bearing cup through the combination of rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8611-01) and universal driver handle (J 8092) while the inner Pinion Bearing cup requires application of Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 45870) joined with universal driver handle (J 8092). Install the inner Pinion Bearing with the pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433) to press until the cone seats on the pinion shim while the selective shim thickness lies between the inner Pinion Bearing and the gear shoulder. Put in a new collapsible spacer after applying the proper axle lubricant to the pinion bearings. Place the outer Pinion Bearing inside the axle housing. The extension housing oil pump/seal installer (J 38694) must be used to position a brand new pinion oil seal after which you should insert the pinion into the axle housing while applying sealant (GM P/N 12346004 or Canadian P/N 10953480) to the splines of the pinion yoke before aligning it according to the removal marks. Apply light taps on the pinion yoke with a soft-faced hammer to mount it onto the pinion shaft until a few threads emerge before installing a new pinion nut which must not use the old one. The flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) needs to be installed onto the pinion yoke while the technician tightens the pinion nut under tool restraint to achieve proper pinion end play. The pinion receiving torque ought to be measured with an inch-pound torque wrench set to 1.0-2.3 n.m (10-20 lb in) for used bearings or 1.7-3.4 n.m (15-30 lb in) for new bearings. Adjust the pinion nut until these torque values are met. Winding the pinion several times post-torque solution allows the bearings to settle properly before repeating the torque measurement for needed adjustments. Reinstall the Differential assembly after you add the appropriate axle lubricant which will be followed by lowering the vehicle.
