The replacement of drive pinion bearings starts with vehicle lifting followed by Differential and drive pinion extraction from the axle. You should use split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) to unpack the bearing from the pinion before you delete the shim. A hammer and brass drift should extract the outer Pinion Bearing cup from the axle housing in an even fashion before removing the inner Pinion Bearing cup. The Pinion Bearing installation requires the outer bearing race installer (J 7817) for 8.0 inch axles while the rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8611-01) works with 8.6 inch axles and both tools must be used with the universal driver handle (J 8092). Apply the rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8608) together with universal driver handle (J 8092) to install the inner bearing cup in place. The operator needs to select the needed shim thickness which they will position between the inner Pinion Bearing and gear shoulder. Use the pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433) with proper technique to install the inner Pinion Bearing by pressing it until the cone seats on the pinion shim. Use a new collapsible spacer followed by application of appropriate axle lubricant to the pinion bearings. After axial positioning of the pinion slot inside the housing you must place the outer Pinion Bearing on it. The 8.0 inch pinion oil seal installation requires use of the pinion oil seal installer (J 33782) while the 8.6 inch installation demands the extension housing oil pump/seal installer (J 38694). Once the new seal is in position, apply gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) as sealant to the pinion yoke splines. Guide the removal marks while pressing the pinion yoke onto its pinion shaft with a soft-faced hammer until several threads become visible through the yoke. Screw the washer onto the newly installed pinion nut followed by the flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01) fastened to the pinion yoke. The technician should tighten the pinion nut with the holding tool in position before rotating the pinion while it sits against the bearing for complete seating. An inch-pound torque wrench should measure the rotating torque at 1.0 - 2.8 nm (10 - 25 inch lbs.) for used bearings while new bearings require 1.7 - 3.4 nm (15 - 30 inch lbs.) torque measurement. The technician must perform additional small nut rotations until the torque measurement reaches its intended specifications. When the specific torque value is reached you should turn the pinion multiple times to verify proper bearing seating before another torque measurement and potential adjustment. Reinstall the Differential followed by brake rotors, brake calipers, tire and wheel assemblies before filling the axle with the correct lubricant when lowering the vehicle.

Vehicle elevation is required first to access the drive pinion bearings for changeout procedures as part of a repair process. You must use split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) to extract the bearing off the drive pinion after removing it from the axle. Proceed by extracting drive Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing through the use of hammer and brass drift while maintaining balanced removal. To install the Pinion Bearing cups start by using the bearing installer (J 7817) alongside the driver handle (J 8092) for the outer cup positioned between. The installation of the inner cup requires the rear Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 29609) with driver handle (J 8092). Position the selective shim of determined width between the inner Pinion Bearing and gear shoulder. The Pinion Bearing race installer (J 5590) enables Pinion Bearing installation before the cone reaches full contact with the pinion shim. Before installation, apply appropriate axle lubricant to a new collapsible spacer along with assembling the pinion inside the axle housing. The pinion receives the outer Pinion Bearing before installation of the new pinion oil seal and the pinion yoke. Proceed with reinstalling the Differential and brake drums followed by tire wheels then add proper axle lubricant before lowering the vehicle.

You need the following equipment to work on the Differential side bearings: some of the needed tools are the j8092 universal driver handle, the j21784 side bearing installer, the j22888-d side bearing remover kit, the j24430 Differential side bearing installer, the j36597 side bearing puller pilot - 9.25 inch, the j45711 Differential side bearing remover- dana 248, the j45900 Differential side bearing installer - dana you should begin the process by taking off the Differential assembly. When working on the 8.6 inch or 10.5 inch axle with rpo g80, put the Differential assembly in a vise, use the j22888-20a and j8107-4 for the 8.6-inch or j8107-3 for the 10.5 inch, both as shown, and follow up by removing the side bearing with the j22888-20a. After taking the Differential out of the vise, use the j45711 and j36597 as shown on the 9.75 inch axle, and take out the side bearing with the j45711 and a hydraulic press. Take apart the 10.5 inch axle without rpo g80 by taking the Differential side bearing cage and roller bearings off the inner bearing race, then carefully remove the inner bearing race without damaging the Differential case. Protect the Differential case by using the j8107-4 for the 3.6 inch axle, j36597 for the 9.75 lay the bearing on the Differential case, then put the side bearing installer from the j8092 onto the Differential side bearing and lower it in place. For the 8.6 inch axle, use j21784, and if you have 9.75 inch or 10.5 inch with no rpo g80, use j24430 or j45900, but for the 9.75 inch with rpo g80 use dt46725. Use the suitable installer and j8092 to drive the bearing onto the Differential case, and afterwards secure the Differential assembly.

The necessary tools include J 7817, J 7818, J 8092, J 8608, J 8611-01, J 8614-01, J 22306, J 22912-B, J 24433, J 36614, J 33782, J 38694, and J 45871.

The required tools are J8092 Universal Driver Handle (J8092), J21784 Side Bearing Installer (J21784), J22888-D Side Bearing Remover Kit (J22888-D), J22912-01 Split-Plate Bearing Puller (J22912-01), and J25299 Side Bearing Installer (J25299).

Use the Pinion Bearing Cup Installer (J45870) with the Driver Handle (J8092).

Use J21784 for the 8.6 inch axle, J24430 or J45900 for the 9.75 inch without RPO G80 or 10.5 inch axles, and DT46725 for the 9.75 inch with RPO G80.

Install a new collapsible spacer and lubricate the pinion bearings with the appropriate axle lubricant.

Protect the differential case by placing the J8107-4 for the 3.6 inch axle, J36597 for the 9.75 inch axle, or J8107-3 for the 10.5 inch axle on the side opposite the bearing installation. Position the bearing on top of the differential case, then install the differential side bearing onto the differential case by attaching one of the side bearing installers to the J8092 and placing it over the differential side bearing.

Install a new collapsible spacer and lubricate the pinion bearings with the appropriate axle lubricant.

Install the outer pinion bearing cup using the J 7818 and J 8092.

Next, remove the axle shafts and the differential assembly, then take out the drive pinion from the axle.

Drive the bearing onto the case using the J25299 or the J21784 and the J8092 before reinstalling the differential assembly.

Continue to tighten the pinion nut in small increments until the correct torque is achieved.

Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) to the splines of the pinion yoke.

Drive the bearing onto the differential case using the appropriate installer and the J8092, then complete the installation by securing the differential assembly.

Rotate the pinion several times to ensure proper seating of the bearings, then recheck and adjust the torque if needed.

Use the J8608 and J8092.

Use the Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer (J24433) to press the inner pinion bearing on until the cone seats on the pinion shim.

Install the inner pinion bearing using the Pinion Bearing Race Installer (J 5590) until the cone seats on the shim, followed by a new collapsible spacer.

The inner pinion bearing is extracted with the Split-Plate Bearing Puller (J22912-01) and a hydraulic press.

Use the Split-Plate Bearing Puller (J 22912-01).

Begin by removing the differential assembly.

Drive the bearing onto the case using the J25299 or the J21784 and the J8092 before reinstalling the differential assembly.

Use the Flange and Pulley Holding Tool (J 8614-01).

First, raise the vehicle and remove the differential assembly.

Next, remove the axle shafts and the differential assembly, then take out the drive pinion from the axle.

Remove the differential side bearing cage and roller bearings from the inner bearing race, then extract the inner bearing race from the differential assembly using a method that will not damage the differential case.
