2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the drive pinion bearings on 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: To replace the drive pinion bearings, gather the necessary tools: j 7817 (Outer Bearing Race Installer), j 7818 (Inner Bearing Race Installer), j 8092 (Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10), j 8608 (Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer), j 8611-01 (Rear Pinion Bearing Race Installer), j 8614-01 (Flange and Pulley Holding Tool), j 22306 (Rear Pinion Clip Bearing Installer), j 22912-b (Split-Plate Bearing Puller), j 24433 (Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer), j 36614 (Pinion Cone and Side Bearing Installer), j 33782 (Pinion Oil Seal Installer), j 38694 (Extension Housing Oil Pump/Seal Installer), and j 45871 (Pinion Bearing Remover). Start the process by lifting and disassembling the Differential. Proceed with removing the drive pinion that is attached to the axle. The tool j 22912-b must be used to press off the bearing at the pinion area of the 8.0-inch axle. To procedure the bearing removal from the 8.6-inch axle position j 45871 first then insert j 22912-b upside down over j 45871 before combining both tools to press off the bearing. Extract both the shim and all Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing by striking them with a hammer and applying a brass drift. To install the outer Pinion Bearing cup for 8.0-inch axles, use j 7817 with j 8092, while the 8.6-inch axle requires j 8611-01 with a j 8092 tool and j 7818 is used for 9.5 ld inch axles combined with j 8092. Install the inner Pinion Bearing cup by using j 8608 and j 8092 together with j 22306 for 9.5 ld inch axles. Place the selective pinion shim between the pinion and the shoulder on the gear before installing it near the inner Pinion Bearing. Proceed with the inner Pinion Bearing installation by using j 24433 or j 36614 until the pinion shim causes proper seating on the cone. Fit a novel collapsible spacer while applying correct axle lubricant to pinion bearings and placing the pinion inside the axle housing. Apply j 33782 for 8.0-inch axles and j 38694 for 8.6-inch axles and j 22388 for 9.5 ld inch axles when installing the outer Pinion Bearing on the pinion shaft together with new pinion oil seals. Sealant gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) should be applied to the pinion yoke splines before installing the yoke onto the pinion shaft to its proper position. You should use j 8614-01 to support the pinion yoke during pinion nut tightening until the proper end play without interference is achieved. Check the pinion rotating torque with an inch-pound torque wrench against the accepted level for both new and used bearings. Rotation of the pinion nut requires additional small tightening passes until the proper torque measurement is met. The technician should rotate the pinion multiple times while double-checking the torque value. Adjust the torque if necessary after complete seat detection of the bearing. The Differential installation process should be completed by filling the axle with proper lubricants before the vehicle is lowered.
